Kharma 45 -
Ecstacy
new sampler promo only
Derry four piece Kharma 45 (great name) have come up with a superb debut. 'Ecstacy' begins with a dour air raid siren like drone which after a few seconds leads into a pounding bass & guitar line, bang on lyrics and a catchy hook. 'Luchia' and 'Medicene Pool' quickly impress as equally appealing. Quote
"A fusion of electronica, dance and classic indie rock forged together to create a sound both hard-edged and atmospheric". They've been busy with The Who at Hyde Pk, Oxegen,T in the park, Reading & Leeds. XXXX www.myspace.com/kharma45 (Posted 6 Aug)
FromMars - This Way Up
Newport's FromMars are just signed to Cardiff's Boobytrap Record Label
(see them on a showcase night with The Boyfriends & The Racketears this coming Friday, 11th August at Cardiff Barfly). '1st May' highlights FromMars original approach which continues through 'More Land To Build Houses On' and 'Fallout'. Boobytrap bosses have worked tirelessly in Welsh music for over twenty years, Producer / Drummer Greg Havers with Waterfront / Manics ... Huw Stephens at Radio One since 1999. It bodes well for FromMars that these fine ears have picked them out and earmarked for success. XXXX www.from-mars.co.uk (Posted 6 Aug)
The Mars Volta -
Amputechture
new album 21 Aug
The Mars Volta have cracked the Top 40 on a couple of occasions with their 21st century 'Freddie Mercury' approach - if they fancy a bit of operatic - in it goes. Their new album 'Amputechture' opens with the seven minute opus 'Vicarious Atonement', then 'Meccamputechture' and 'Day Of The Baphomets' - two eleven minute trax follow. Interest is high in their new album, from people like Chilli's guiatrist John Frusciante who contributes to it. 'Amp' should see MV consolidate their success still further

The Hedrons
Be My Friend
new single 31 July
Hard rocking Glaswegian four piece The Hedrons will win many more friends with this, like the 35,000 who've already signed up on their myspace site. At 174 bpm 'Be My Friend' is fast, furious ... desperate even - a storming track in an authentic Girlschool kinda way, just like the other ten songs they blistered their way through at last Friday's Mad4it! Too risky for a bland old ILR, this is real energy music
. Oh and they're gals, oh and they look good. XXXX www.thehedrons.com (Posted 6 Aug)
The Young Knives -
Hot Summer (Metronomy remix)
new single remix
'Hot Summer, what a bummer, throw a sickie' ... don't let your boss catch you singing along ... he/she may read something into these sad words! The Young Knives have hit a strand of thought in a Two Ronnies type way and it's funny ... I'm not sure who'd like to hear the remix rather than the fast and frenzied original but ... it is funny, more funny than the original.

The Walkmen -
A Hundred Miles Off

new album 18 September

The Walkmen released 'The Rat' a couple of years back to a Top 40 placing, it should have been a bigger hit. Still much requested but not quite as widely known as it should be. Now comes a nerw album 'A Hundred Miles Off' recorded at Inner ear, Arlington, Virginia - home of Fugazi, Nation of Ulysses and Bad Brains. The Walkmen in their stripped back style are a bit of an aquired taste, but there is a lot of substance here
