James Dean Bradfield -
The Great Western

new album 24 Jul - single 10 Jul

The Manics main man returns with a first solo album picking up the story very much where the last song he wrote for The Manics left off.
'Ocean Spray' was a heartbreaking song about the death of his mother and 'The Great Western' (at one time Cardiff's equivalent to London's Hope & Anchor) features eleven new equally meaningful songs. Opener the punchy 'That's No Way To Tell A Lie' will be the first single out on 10th July, then I'd probably go for 'Bad Boys & Painkillers' - but there's plenty of intriguing titles here .... 'On Saturday Morning We Will Rule The World', 'Run Romeo Run', 'The Wrong Beginning' and 'Which Way To Kyffin' XXXX www.jamesdeanbradfieldofficial.com (Posted 27 Jun)
Franz Ferdinand -
Eleanor Put Your Boots On
new single 17 Jul
A totally new version of this song, recorded in Benton Harbour, Michigan whilst they were on US Tour duty. This is surprisingly different, accoustic based, pleasant melody, unusual lyric, the usual catchy chorus - all four tracks here are quality ... good stuff and chartbound!

The Flaming Lips -
The W.A.N.D.
new single 10 Jul
The Flaming Lips follow-up to 'The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song' is 'The W.A.N.D.'. The Spongebobsquarepants theme singers have come up with another winner here, a kind of laid back observationist protest song - Top Twenty easily, check out the tasty Goldfrapp remix, laid back and dreamy - beam me up Scotty! ??? (they won't tell us) -
Zerox Machine
new tbc
If I were a Zerox Machine I'd be fully expectant that one day someone would come along and plant their arse cheeks on my window to the world
. This is a 'cracking' track geddit, a storming 140bpm ... this outfit have a regular electro clubnight in London, three DJ's, one femme ? Simon from Gorillaz plays guitar, Youth has produced, they've collaborated with The Libertines? Whoever it is could be heading Top Ten, bad news for photocopiers everywhere. XXXXx (Posted 28 Jun)
Boy Kill Boy -
Civil Sin
new single 24 Jul
We liked this when it first came round a year ago, since then Boy kill Boy have made a sustained attack on the Top Ten and as this now follows the brilliant 'Suzie' it should go the same way. Perhaps not as commercial as Susie, it's got the pacey trademark Boy Kill Boy sound and should do equally well. XXXX

Hope Of The States -
Left
new album out now
For me there is a unique quality to this band. 'Blind Meridian' is my favourite song of the year, it agonizes over the state the world seems to be in and uses irony to ridicule a system that pokes fun and worse at honesty. I can't think of anyone else who has come up with such a work of art. Just the one song makes this album brilliant .. but there's twelve more masterpieces here.

Head Automatica -
Graduation Day
new single 3 Jul
In the last year EMO has taken off big time, Head Automatica 'Beating Heart Baby' must be due for re-release after this storming single 'Graduation Day' hits the charts. A couple of floorfilling songs for sure, and this band are following Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco into 2006's EMO Hall Of Fame.

The Knife -
We Share Our Mother's Health
new single 3 Jul
We Share Our Mother's Health ??? This is the weirdest track of the year so far, a very strange machine noise like intro with no beat, leads into a jarring rhythm track. Swedish (nothing in common with Abba) and I'm glad England didn't play Germany. The Knife are an appealing band, there's some fine material here and I wouldn't be surprised to see this tune in the Top 40. XXXX

The View -
Wasted Little DJs

new single 7 August

Hmmm, stroke chin ... now what could they mean by that? let me see that vid again .. it's me, well it could be me. The View are four Dundonians from Dundee .. and this three minute power pop epic comes from their debut album which was recorded in two weeks with the help of Owen Morris (of Verve & Oasis fame) on producer duty in rural Yorkshire last month.
Fresh from supporting Primal Scream, The View play Cardiff Barfly on 15 August. XXXX www.theviewareonfire.co.uk (Posted 28 Jun)
The Yell -
My Baby's Into Witchcraft

new single 10 Jul

Another fine CD from Marquis Cha Cha. The Yell formed in the summer of '04' when Idle Hans and James Peacock sought four good looking lads and lasses to make music, Tom Weatherall (dancing and noise), Robert Brown (painting and fights), Rachel Langley (grade 17 at the club style organ) and Ian Baxter (drums). The Yell will make some waves rather like their label mates Bromheads Jacket.
