The Automatic -
Monster
new single 5 June
FF Vinyl boss Martin Bowen was raving about this song at least a year ago and at last dreams come true with it's release as a single and impending third Top 40 success for The Automatic. Another irresistable hook and trademark backing vocals and a pounding 140bpm - produced and engineered by Richard Jackson at stir Studios in Cardiff mixed by Steve Harris of U2 and Kaiser Chiefs association - Top 15??? XXXX

Sandi Thom -
Smile .. It Confuses People
new album 5 June
Great title and 24 year old South Londoner Sandi Thom, like Nizlopi and The Arctic Monkeys before her is another major word of mouth internet breakthrough. Sandi's basement concerts started with 10 internet viewers and climbed to 70,000 at the point when RCA decided to sign her. Signing to Columbia in America this week and launching her single 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker With Flowers In My Hair' next Monday, this debut album is a perky, edgy listen ... melancholly meets irony on many subjects, the human race race to oblivion, love lost, love found and the vocals and arrangements make this very special ... good luck to her, young business woman of the year! XXXXx

Nerina Pallot -
Everybody's Gone To War
new single 22 May
Nerina Pallot (pronounced pal-o) has come up with a song in a million, a lyrical statement which neatly sums up recent military history and passes ironic comment
"everybody's gone to war but we don't know what we're fighting for". Originally released a year ago, and I fondly remember Nerina's brilliant session for my Red Dragon FM show back in 2001. A wonderfully talented singer songwriter who has paid her dues, the whole of the reactivated 'Fires' album is worthy listening. So why the re-release? This is quality material and with support from Radio Two, Radio One and even reaching Capital FM .. Nerina's time has come - brilliant! XXXXx

The Zutons -
Valerie
new single 19 June
Receiving dancefloor approval last weekend The Zutons are making waves again their second album 'Tired Of Hanging Around', and the second single from it, the pacey 84-168bpm
'Valerie' (no relation to Steve Winwood. Follow-up to 'Why Won't You Give Me Your Love' this is another good tune and chartbound ... Top 20? See them on tour throughout May, (they're at Cardiff University on the 21st May winding up at London Hammersmith Apollo on 16th June) XXXx

YeahYeahYeahs -
Turn Into
new single 19 June
YYY's return with a rather faster follow-up to Gold Lion, and the 123bpm 'Turn Into' should improve upon the steady progress being made by Karen O and Nick Zinner. After the success at Radio One's big weekend there are a few dates this week, London Forum Tuesday 16th & Wed 17th May, Glasgow Barrowlands 19th, Manchester Academy 20th and Birmingham Academy on the 21st May. 36 Crazyfists -
I'll Go Until My Heart Stops
new single 5 June
Like Trivium's 'Dying In Your Arms', 36 Crazyfists are aiming mainstream with this, a fine song and a great radio edit picked up already by Zane Lowe. These Alaskans have had production help from Sal Villaneuva of Taking Back Sunday fame and guest vocals from Howard Jones of Killswitch and Engage. Rousing rock, four K's from Kerrang their new album Rest Inside The Flames is scheduled for 12 June release, and promises much for their mainstage Download slot supporting Guns N Roses. XXXX

The Grates -
19-20-20
new single 26 June
Australian teasers The Grates arrive on The Cure's label Fiction Records, firmly tongue in cheek with their album 'Gravity Won't Get You High' giving you a pretty good clue as to where this two minute '19-20-20' is coming from. Catchy and worth two mins of anyone's time, see them support the Zutons and on their own headline shows in June ... Middlesbrough, Oldham, Leeds, Bournemouth, Leicester, Glasgow, Liverpool and London 93 Feet East. XXXx

Battle -
Children
new single 12 June
Battle struck their first Top 40 blow with their debut single earlier this year and their second single 'Children' should improve on 'Tendency's' number 37 showing. A solid rocker produced by Gareth Jones of Interpol and Futureheads duties, and remixed by Glaswegian trio Union Of Knives the single will also feature a bonus track 'Song For Gary' written in tribute to Gary Jarman, The Cribs lead singer ... (don't panic, nothing's happened, he's still with us - I've checked) Anyway's, lookin good! XXXx

The Fallout Trust -
When We Are Gone
new single 29 May
Good luck to East-London based sextet The Fallout Trust with 'Whe We Are Gone', a tune they've recorded in their own Dalston studio. Q Quarters studios is set in a warehouse they've converted themselves in the image of Berlin's famous Hansa studios (don't mention Boney M) - Arcade Fire meets The Super Furry Animals, stark and steadily progressing, with a little luck Top 40! C/O/R/D -
Why I Want It
promo only
This is the second teasing taster from Norwich band CORD, and I think Island Records have made a superb signing here. Tightly arranged, great production, insistent basslines, unusual and attention grabbing intro's characterised on 'Go Either Way' and now on this second track with a great title, 'Why I Want It'. You may have seen C/O/R/D support The Crimea and Orson, they've been gigging this month with The Upper Room. XXXX
