Pure Reason Revolution -
The Dark Third
new album 12 June
Pure Reason Revolution are leading the Prog Rock and 'The Dark Third' is quite something ... sophisticated, layers of sound beautifully assembled, lush vocals, superb production and the all important prog rock accessory ... a concept. This is not music to get down and boogie to but rather like it's original 70's version you feel like sitting on the floor, legs folded, in front of a stage packed with talented muso's and a great light show ... the reality is of course a little different but this band are here for the long haul and they've already set they're sights firmly on Floyd territory. Brilliant! XXXXx

The Academy Is -
Checkmarks
new single 29 May
The Academy Is support Panic At The Disco on Wednesday night at Cardiff University and we can't wait, two great emo bands on one bill. Chicago based Academy are set to chart with this their first commercial single release, and the oddly titled 'Checkmarks' is a fine single released on 7" vinyl and CD which has been lifted from their debut album 'Almost Here'. Having headlined the 'Ambitious Ones & Smoking Guns' tour earlier this year you can also see them at Brighton's Great Escape Festival on May 20 and then supporting label mates Fall Out Boy, Chartbound.

Robots In Disguise -
Turn It up
new single 22 May
You don't need to crash the stage wiith Robots In Disguise, Sue Denim and Dee Plume are more than happy to crash the audience, surf shoulders, bounce off the floor, drink your drinks ... you can't ignore this energy packed show. As a bloke I have to confess by a long chalk the most energetic shows we've seen recently are The Robots and Juliette Lewis ... Electric Six and Paddingtons are some way behind. Another oddity here is the record label ... President, who seem to have done nothing since George McCrae & KC & The Sunshine Band in the 70's, I'm given to understand the President of President is taken with them and I can see why, this should be Top 40 easy. Appetite For Construction -
Something In Construction Records Sampler
This brilliant new record label have in their first fifteen months assembled quite a rosta of talent and here on show ten fine new acts. Akira The Don is immediately attention grabbing, see for yourself when he plays Cardiff Barfly on Thursday 18th May ... the superb single 'Clones' received loads of airplay and 'Bankers' (NOT ... substitute W for B and you'll get the picture) is a forcefull denigration of our money abnd greed fuelled world with all it's political deceits, much of Akira's website
www.akirathedon.com seems frivoulous (see pics of ATD at work below) but there's serious pooints made here. Then there's The Silent League and 'Kings & Queens' which rather whets your appetite for their second album. Christian Silva - a Queen/Super Furry Animals crossover, Melbourne group Damn Arms, from New York City there's Kid Cassanova, San Francisco's Every Move A Picture, 69 Corps, Lazarus, Other Passengers and more Akira with Cardiff based Brave Captain. Plenty to get into here - a fine collection of new talent. XXXX

Veto Silver -
Stay Young Stay Beautiful
new single 12 June
South London based Veto Silver (great name) debuted in 2005 with 'When You're With That Girl'. This razor sharp three piece return with the follow-up 'Stay Young, Stay Beautiful' and with airplay and a little luck it could be the big Summer hit of the year. With it's eternal 'Stay Young, Stay Beautiful' message, musically again confirming an electro trend, with mixes by American synth rockers Protocol and American synth-punks Protokoll. XXXx

The Longcut -
Gravity In Crisis free download from 10 April
A Call & Response
new album 12 June
The Longcut's new album 'A Call & response' is produced by johnny Dollar of Massive Attack fame and 'Gravity In Crisis' is the first sample of what to expect. A long drum track intro for a five minute track, interesting new titles 'A Last Act of Desperate Men', A Quiet Life' , 'The Kiss Off' .. "guitar music informed by the architecture of dance music". An aquired taste. XXX
