This week's post ...

Ash
Binary
new single 24 May 2010
Well full marks for productivity... however I'm not sure there's a demand for fifty two new Ash singles no matter how good they may be... odds on most fans will ask for 'Girl From Mars', 'Kung Fu' and 'Oh Yeah'... nevertheless there is a certain quality to Ash that remains to this day... it's just fifteen years later and the demographic has changed and hooked into Grime and the like... Hit maybe

Chapel Club
Five Trees
new single
Hotly tipped Chapel Club embark on single number two, the strangely titled 'Five Trees'. A pounding three minute anthemic blast which stands out from the crowd and with NME profile and Radio One airplay should easily see this band in the top forty. Good band, good tune.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip
Sick Tonight / Great Britain
new single
Well Le Sac & Pip are providing social commentary here again and it's great food for thought... 'Sick Tonight' an anthem for the Central Station end of Cardiff St Mary's Street come Friday and Saturday night.... and then 'Great Britain' -
"There's a lot I hate about Britain..." Pip raises the question of why London's knife crime is stagnant in 2009 when it rose 120% between 2002 and 2008. A good question... any one who's come into contact with City Centre patrols in Cardiff will have some suspicions on the answer... Police resources having been cut to the bone leave the humans who have to enact law-keeping in an impossible position... "we can't sustain this number of police" said a Labour Government Minister three years ago... "we haven't got time for that" said one officer of a drug dealer discovered with one hundred ecstacy tabs on him ... 100 potential deaths and the cops couldn't cope with the work load. I feel certain Pip & Sac are on the the left side of the debate... having concluded this is most likely the misguided side I'm glad they write about it, but I'm sorry they haven't yet mentioned which party it was lowered the Union Jack in 1964, who it was ended the British Empire in 1948 and oh yeah who it was led Britain in 1924 to become the first country in the world to recognise the communist revolution of Stalin and Lenin that created the Soviet Union. Google it... it's the missing jigsaw bits we all need. These guys are achieving a serious cult following with a sell-out show in Cardiff a few days back... with airplay this single could hit big... filed with the good stuff.

Kevin Rudolph
I Made It
new single 25 April 2010
Yep top ten again... a fine return for Rudolph the guitar virtuoso Madonna signing chroni
cled in his 'Let It Rock' hit... this time it's Jay Sean, Lil Wayne and Birdman with Cash Money Heroes... HIT!

LCD Soundsystem
Drunk Girls
new single 17 May 2010
Yes I see the vid in my minds eye... lot of quick flashes... flashbacks.. can't be bad! This could be LCD Soundsystem's biggest hit.... definate top ten possibility.

The Like
He's Not A Boy
new single
Hollywood's aristocracy children return older and wiser and certainly shorter and sharper. Four gals who are the seeds of movie directors and record producers and have a skill for power punk/pop have returned three years after last playing the UK and including Cardiff on their tour... and they're sounding great.... 'He's Not A Boy ... you could trust' ...quirky word play in the title for a belting two minute tune which with luck and airplay presence could do well... top twenty even. Good record.

Stornoway
Zorbing
new single 31 May 2010
"Life in your attic, I can feel the static ....." Falsetto folk indie accosutic... quite different to the norm, kinda catchy, perhaps 'Zorbing' is not strong enough to go Top 40 but Stornoway's sound does stand out from the crowd... so... maybe?

Tine Tempah
Frisky
new single 7 June 2010
"If I tell her I'm a boxer will she let me down her knickers.....?" Probably. Tinie's back with a bulging hard-on, Grimestoppers next, a trademark follow-up utilising the same formula that hit big for 'Pass Out' - slow startin' into a drum and bass finale... Maybe he'll do a McFly and use the Uranus pun next time.... nothing's bannable anymore and Tinie's well up the ring in the race to be most outrageous... Mr Tempah known to his Mom as Patrick Junior C. Okogwu (born 7 November 1988) has made a good 'old' stylee London Ghana record, tacky and tasteless. Big hit - possibly another Tempah number one.

This week's Top 40 ...

Top 40 Sun 25 Apr 10
'Oh My Gosh'... Diana Vickers is Number One with 'Once' demoting the Usher to runner-up.

The big Album Chart battle saw AC/DC's 'Iron Man 2 - Soundtrack' come out top over Paul Weller's 'Wake Up The Nation', denying the Mod-Dad a sixth solo Album Chart-topper.

Stateside BoB's enchanting 'Nothin' On You' overtook Rihanna to claim top spot.

A couple of old trax receive new interest and arrive in the chart again... Tina Turners 1989 top tenner 'The Best' re-enters at 9 while at 33 Liverpool FC's Kop Anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is back for the first time since 1963 when it topped the Singles Chart for three weeks. A Rodgers & Hammerstein song it featured in their 1956 musical 'Carousel' itself a number one album... and since 1972 is an integral part of the home game ritual at Anfield.

Glee Cast get a new brace of tunes in... their versions of All American Rejects 'Gives You Hell' at 14 and Lionel Ritchie's 'Hello' at 35.

Last week's Album Chart-topper Plan B returns with 'Stay Too Long' at 37 while 3OH!3's insightful 'Don't Trust Me' at last gets a UK hit placing at 22 nearly a year after it's original UK release.

BBC 6 Music

A senior BBC manager has left the organisation after plans to axe digital radio stations 6 Music and Asian Network were leaked to The Times. A draft version of the BBC's strategic review was leaked 11 days ahead of planned publication on 9 March. Director general Mark Thompson said at the time he was "incredibly angry".

Brown's Belgrano

Posted Wednesday 28th April 2010 - BBC News
For thirteen years Gordon Brown has been doing the work of two men... Laurel & Hardy.
They must be mightily impressed with him.
And now the hilarious Brown 'Belgrano' Moment.... and as a former lifelong Labour supporter I can't help wonder why Gordon Brown should be feeling annoyed that a lifelong 65 year old Labour supporter should ask a question about immigration?
And why should such a question be a sign of a bigot?
Presumably anyone who questions is to be dismissed as a 'bigot', lifelong Labour supporter or not.
Nevermind the Leaders debates, the elderly and unwittingly far from 'ordinary' Gillian Duffy angered over the tax she's paying on her pension seems to be the first to have vociferously and publicly challenged the PM on his policies.
She seems as puzzled at the black hole of answers as anyone in their right mind would be?
Brown like Stan & Ollie has played the fool to advance his career with routines like claiming he didn't realise people would pay more tax when he increased income tax for low earners from 10% to 20%.
The central question surely must be why would Brown tell such an obvious lie.
Lies are unsettling, like an unwelcome poke.
Is Mr Brown mentally ill? An unelected power crazed megalomaniac who'd prefer us not to know the extent of his secret 'I know best' world view??
The original General Belgrano moment came on 'Nationwide' - BBC1's live 'One Show' of the day when in the 1983 election Mrs Thatcher claimed to another 'ordinary' member of the public who knew her facts that the Argentinian warship was sunk when it was sailing towards the Falkland Islands battle zone. It was suspected at the time and has since been proven the Argentines were in fact sailing away from the battle.
Maggie went on to win a landslide... and the BBC's fourteen year long running 'Nationwide' was axed shortly after the elction.

Power eh... Ominous.

Jonny Wing News

Posted Monday 26th April 2010 -
Congratulations to Jonny who's just completed his debut London Marathon. A month or so back he told me he wouldn't be joining next year's... however I've got dosh on him for 2011 already! Pictured above in fine form, here's from a recliner somewhere cool is the latest from our hero....
Hello. Yesterday as you are all aware I took part in the London Marathon, running for Refuge. It was an amazing experience and one of the most emotional things I’ve ever had the opportunity to participate in. I have attached a photo to prove I made it to the fininshing line. Despite a recorruance of a knee injury at 16 miles which slowed me down considerably I am delighted to say I cross the finish line in 4 hours 22 minutes and 29 seconds, fighting back the pain but not the tears at the end! The crowd support along the entire route carries you through to the end of the race, and I can now proudly say I’ve joined the Marathon runners club. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you on behalf of Refuge and myself for your fantastic support over the last 6 months as I’ve built up to this. It was amazing to hear some familiar voices cheering me on as I came down the finishing stretch. I will be able to let you know at the end of May the final total raised for Refuge. It’s looking good though! For those of you who were waiting to see if I would get to the end of the race before sponsoring me then now is your chance to dig deep! www.justgiving.com/jwing
Now, where is that email from Wednesday 17th December 2008 promising a good Academy Music Group donation if I took part and completed the London Marathon in 2010? Ah, yes, I’ve found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS!!
Jon
