"Make me a deal and make it good for me, I won't be full of myself I can't afford to be, this is small town music this is big town music, he's ahead of his time you know but he can't use it if only he could prove it ... tomorrow's just a song away...." Another fine offering from quirky new US outfit Hockey, it's just three minutes, a simple idea, fine delivery, a great vocal makes it sound easy but I think these guys may have that something extra. Good tune.

To Kingdom Come new single
'To Kingdom Come' intros with a charming fiddly guitar line, and is that flute? Solid Phil Collins style drums take you into another dreamy vocal "I believe in you so you believe in me ...". Passion Pit are yet another band who could well crack the big time, this is good well thought out material and deserves a chance. Good

Take Me To The Hospital EQ 09 new single
Prodigy continue full steamrolling ahead with another throbbing thumping dance floor shaker, perhaps a little more accessible than 'Warriors' in this three minute thumping 'dalek' speak mix.... "Take me to the hospital... " the only word missing is exterminate, then again Snap used that near twenty years back.Top 5 maybe..

Just Because new single 3 August & album sampler
Raygun 'the razzle of new wave, the dazzle of Scissor Sisters, the filthiness of Primal Scream, the nous of a band ready to start a revolution'. Now where did I hear that last bit before, Lennon ' Revolution', what no-one predicted was we'd have it dished up to us not as a 'Revolution' but as 'Progression'. Anyways, Raygun named after their front man Ray Gun have a fine set of songs set for their debut album 'Waiting In Line', 'In The City', 'Lord Forgive Me', 'Can't Say No' and the superb single 'Just Because' released on 3 August. Look out for it's vid directed by Joseph Kahn ... ones to watch....

More halicinogenics in evidence here, something of that order anyway as Flaming Lips return with ... Stardeath & White Dwarfs. Track 1 'New Heat' is a clever 149bpm of a chunky Lips trademark tune accompanied here by another Lips like tune 'Borderline' this time credited to the Flaming Lips as well ... I'd wager it a good disguise worthy of MI5. Hit

As expected with all the hype JLS go straight to number one with strong new entries for Chicane, Beyonce and 3OH!3 who have a healthy stack of remixes of their US top tenner 'Don't Trust Me' our fave's the Kid Cudi cut.

Two surprises perhaps - The Arctic Monkeys surprisingly bomb from 12 to 38 in their second week and Green Days '21 Guns' crawls in at 40.

A strange consequence of having only 3% physical singles sold in the singles rather than the popularity of the acts or their songs - the Arctics new album is out on 24 August and Green Day's '21 Guns' is on both their album and the 'Transformers' soundtrack.

For the first time all the records leaving the top forty are by the same artist ... six Michael Jackson tunes depart allowing The Noisettes to get a second bite at 30 with the re-entery of 'Never Forget You'.

Lost our Head
Two years back Virgin Megastores were healthily into a third decade of trading ... or maybe not. A management buy out led to the creation of the Zavvi brand (which) survives on-line. Zavvi folded after a year with the demise of Woolworth's. Things looked bleak until another management buy back of stock led to the high street arrival of Head, branded up in Zavvi's trademark green & font ... hoo-ray!

Errrrrr-no.... Head is closing after three months, it seems the whole exercise is a plan to minimise losses on stock by previous owners.

Beware the green shoots of recovery...
