16 years ago Oh it's a catalogue of betrayal ... Maggie dumped by The Tories when she indicated her will for less Europe, three years later led Tory rebels calling for a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty. Then Prime Minister John Major, famously declaring he'd not read the treaty called a three line whip to defeat Lady Thatcher's rebels in the House of Lords by 445 to 176. A week later in the House of Commons it was much closer - 318 v 317. With both sides tied the casting vote of the speaker was enough to commit us to conforming to EU regulation shaped bananas and sausages, post offices, light bulbs n all. If dear old Betty Boothroyd had voted the other way.... maybe Take That wouldn't have got their first chart-topper, 'Pray' went straight to number one on Sunday 11 July 1993

this week's post ...

Animal Kingdom
Tin Man
new single 6 July
A haunting guitar line leads into a dreamy falsetto-ish vocal. London quartete Animal Kingdom's debut for Warner Brothers is a strong affair and should encourage much curiosity about the band, they'll be lucky if they hit first time but this is a strong debut boding well for their album.

Dead Weather
Treat Me Like Your Mother
new single 13 July
Hey this is a stand-out track, kinda rocky, with some of the edgiest femme vocals. The Dead Weather featuring Jack White's massive drum sound and this is another incarnation you might have feared weaker than the previous but no. Alison Mosshearts vocals are a force to be reckoned with
"Come on look me in the eye, you want to tell a lie, you can't and you know why, I'm just like your Mother .... play dumb, play dead, try to manipulate, you blink when you breath and you breath when you lie" This is magnetic and massive, utterly brilliant.

Marmaduke Duke
Silhouettes
new single 6 July
A little longer than the 100 second hit 'Rubber Lover', 'Silhouettes' pulls in at three minutes rumbling along in an elcectr rock fashion at 168bpm. An unusual 'Popcorn' type intro is a stand-out feature before the song kicks in with again a surprisingly catchy understated vocal hook, there must be big remix potential with this, demonstrated when the atmos drops down a gear shortly before it's finale. Very different, very good.

Passion Pit
Moth's Wings
new single
The third track on Passion Pit's debut album 'Manners' is, perhaps not quite as strong as their last single 'The Reeling'. Passion Pit are a wonderful curiosity. There's something of the Arcade Fire about them and this new tune 'Moth's Wings' relies heavily on a superb lyric and vocal melody, the understated rhythm track blending perfectly with a loose sounding guitar atmosphere. A positively charming musical event with the accompanying track 'Folds In Your Hands' full of falsetto and eccentric uniqueness too. Very nice

This week's Top 40 ...

Top 40 Sun 14 Jun 09

Ten new tunes this week led by 18 year old Chislehurst lass Pixie Lott who goes straight to number one with her first release 'Mama Do'. Kasabian top the album chart and 'Underdog' becomes their second song on the top forty singles.

David Guetta enlists the help of Kelly Rowland on his new hit 'When Love Takes Over' which is immediately covered by the obscurely named Airi L and also bounced in at 22 perhaps because of it's availability in two six minute club mixes.

GaGa's back, Linkin Park from Transformers 2, Jordin Sparks, Pussycat Dolls, The Saturdays and at 33 Lenka. Lenka Kripac, a former Yugoslav, former Aussie now living in LA - you may know her new UK hit 'The Show' from the Old Navy ads, then again.

10 new entries – 2 climbers, 24 down, 4 non-movers

The listening Gov.

It's nice to know they're listening now according to Lord Mandelson (Lord ... come on) it's inevitable we'll be dumping the pound. Listening or not they'll certainly be analysing last week's European Election votes and here they are in simplified form with change on 2004 ...

Less people voted indeed, and in mysterious ways. Here's the top line votes and the difference on five years ago. 34% voted this year compared to 37.6% in 2004 - parties with a reduced vote in plain font, parties with an increase in support are highlighted

Tories 4.198m - down 200k
UKIP 2.498m - down 152k
Labour 2.381m - down 1.337m
Liberal 2.080m - down 370k

Green 1.223m - up 190k
BNP 943k - up 135k
SNP 321k - up 90k

Plaid Cymru 126k - down 33k

English Democrats 279k - up 149k
Christian Party 249k - up 193k
Socialist Labour 173k - didn't stand in 04
NO2EU 153k - didn't stand in 04
Scottish Green 80k - up 1k
Jury Team 78k - didn't stand in 04
UK First 74k - didn't stand in 04
Pensioners 37k - up 4k

Scottish Socialists 10k - down 51k

If you add the votes for UK nationalist parties together you get an intriguing picture of the number who are uneasy about dumping the pound and UK sovereignty.
The combined votes for the anti-EU parties - UKIP, NO2EU, UK First, BNP, English Democrats, Christian Party number of 4.2million - that is greater than the Tory vote and gives some idea of heated debate to come.
Funny there seems to be a splurge of newly initiated anti-EU parties maybe our rulers will take the opportunity to use the time honoured Roman battle plan of 'divide and conquer'..... hmmmm
