7 years ago... Sunday 26 May 2002 Terry Wogan was in only his 29th year of Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the Eurovision Song Contest was held in Estonia. At Cardiff's Millenium Stadium Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup Final to do the double while Birmingham City beat Norwich City in the Division One Play Off Final that saw them return to the top flight for the first time since 1986 - Stoke beat the Bluebirds in the play-offs for promotion from Division Two. England were heading to World Cup Quarter Final defeat against Brazil in Japan, BBC1 beat ITV1's monthly peak time audience figures for the first time in forty years and "... it's been so empty without me..." about to make his acting debut in '8 Mile', Slim Shady Marshall Mathers Eminem Show returned straight to number one
Guess who's back? Retired?? No!!!

this week's post ...

Depeche Mode
Peace
new single 15 June
Oh they're so dark aren't they? And I admire the way they've continued without support of the Brits and it's nepotistic musical establishment. 'Peace' is almos
t hymn like, I don't suppose it'll make the Top 40 unless there's an exceptional remix package but nevertheless it's quality Depeche Mode and a highlight from their new 'Sounds Of The Universe' album.

Johnny Foreigner
Feels Like Summer
new single 22 June
'Feels Like Summer' fast and furious and taking a leaf out of Marmaduke Duke in that the tune is just 2 minutes long. This is possibly the best and most accessible Johnny Foreigner single yet, probably still too noisy for most of our commercial radio big knobs, but maybe with BEEB support a top forty position isn't out of the question

La Roux
Bulletproof - Remixes
new single 22 June
'In For The Kill' may yet top the singles chart judging by the longevity of Ga Ga's 'Poker Face' and it has to be a good move to get the follow-up song 'Bulletproof' circulating while 21 yearr old Londoner Elly La Roux is hot. 'Bulletproof' picks up where 'In For The Kill' left off, it's a bright electro pop song with a hint of grime in there somewhere with tasty remixes here by Zinc and Tepr. You may have seen La Roux supporting Lily Allen, cigs in hand possibly, either way she releases her self-titled debut album on 29 June. Top 5 we reckon

Lazee & Neverstore
Hold On
new single 15 June
24 year old international citizen and Malmo / 6 year London resident Lazee has a huge hit with this in his native Sweden and Hard2Beat could have another Basshunter on their hands here. 'Hold On' starts like a rock track before sidling into a computerised drum track, it's a "broken hearts out there waiting for someone to be near" tune which comes in nine mixes. You get PJ Puddy, Stonebridge, Matrix & Futurebound and Adam K. Hit potential

Noisettes
Never Forget You
new single 22 June
'Never Forget You' is the second most immediate track from The Noisettes superb 'Wild Young Hearts' album. A 141bpm jaunt with a bassline atmosphere a little reminiscent of Duffy's 'Mercy' that morphs into a fine soft rock / pop song and with Shingai's sweet vocals ... Top Ten!

Paulo Nutini
Candy
new single 18 May
Yeah this is another fine tune from Mr Nutini. Candy lends itself to a soft accoustic treament well and the Boe Weaver mix is a cool upbeat production. Verdict - top forty hit

Vagabond
Sweat (Until The Morning)
new single 8 June
Hey there's a kind of Arrested Development 'People Everyday' intro boombox type thang goin' on. Vagabond led by Alex Vegas - a vocalist cross between Michael Hutchence & Bryan Ferry with a track that off-beats rock - electro - hip-hop. 'Sweat' has a strange appeal meandering feel with a laid back vocal which is easily accessible (ie pleasant to listen to). Some fine mixes from Toddla T, an uptempo 120bpm Plugs and an intricate vocal beat mesh from The Filthy Dukes ... "I'm too sexy for my vest..." Right said Fred let's have a cuppatea... Hit maybe

Who's the boss?
... if ever invisible strings have been
pulled it's probably never been more so.
The billionaire Barclay Brothers, owners of The Daily Telegraph - and since February new owners of the Woolworths brand name - have had the MPs expenses story for six months, yet they choose now to launch a week long series of revelations which leaves democracy possibly fatally wounded.
In three weeks we'll learn just what effect this sorry saga will have with the European Election results.
Many of our MPs, who unafraid to lecture us on societies rights and wrongs are revealed to be cheapskate money launderers.
The MP for Scunthorpe having claimed thousands of pounds for a mortgage paid off 18 months earlier seems to be in hiding. Today his constituents have been passing his house and making their anger known by beeping their horns and shouting obscenities.
It's a great advert for democarcy - a western country with an unelected leader and a different set of rules for politicians.
Where does that leave us?
... and who's pulling Browns strings?

Christian? Not here

1 catching 2...
BBC Radio 1 presenter Chris Moyles has almost as many listeners as rival breakfast host Sir Terry Wogan, new figures have revealed.
Moyles notched up an audience of 7.7m people, compared with 7.78m for the veteran Radio 2 host.
In the first three months of 2009, Sir Terry's audience slipped from 7.9m, while Moyles increased from 7.3m.
Radio industry body Rajar also says that listening is at a higher level than any time in the past 10 years.
Almost 46m people - more than 90% of all UK adults - tuned in each week in the first quarter of this year.
A third listened via digital radio, the internet or digital television, and the number using mobile phones rose 13%.
BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 Live both saw audiences grow, while BBC Radio 2 remained the UK's most popular station.
This is radio's highest audience since new recording methods were introduced 10 years ago by Rajar (Radio Joint Audience Research).
BBC Radio 4 drew its largest audience since 2003 - 9.98m - in the first quarter of this year.
BBC Radio 5 Live, along with its digital sister service 5 Live Sports Extra, pulled in 6.3m - its biggest audience for four years.
Commercial radio's audience also grew from 31.2m to 31.5m listeners a week, while BBC Radio 2 held onto the overall top spot with 13.46m listeners.
Last month, the BBC denied a report that Moyles was being removed from the breakfast slot in a reshuffle later this year.
It pointed to the last set of Rajar figures, saying he had "added more listeners" and "has a hugely successful show".
If Radio 1 overtakes Radio 2, it will be the first time it's been Britain's most listened to radio station since 1993 when Birt/Bannister era thinking forced Radio One to halve it's audience. Story here
