37 years ago Brian Clough led Derby County to their first League Championship, Leeds United and Chelsea had top ten singles while Cardiff City's Ninian Park grandstand was extended to run the length of the pitch. Prime Minister Ted Heath agreed to allow 50,000 Ugandan Asians to settle in Britain following President Idi Amin's decision to expel them from Uganda for "sabotaging the economy". Alice Cooper had a novel idea to promote his new US single 'School's Out' - copies would be sold with a free pair of paper panties. Alas, US Customs wouldn't allow the half million British made panties into the States as all imported goods have to be ... fireproof. Doh! 'School's Out' went to the UK's No.1 on 8 August 72

'School's Out for Summer ....'

this week's post ...

Arctic Monkeys
Crying Lightning
new single
The new song from the Arctics seems more studied than previous platters, this is a back with a bang kind of tune which should see the top ten with ease. Can't
wait for the album.

Booty Luv
Say It
new single 10 August
The first ladies of Hed Kandi Booty Luv should easily follow Cascada to the top with this storming new sex song. 'Say It' gets straight to the point
"If you want my body come get it...". The Booty gals had a series of top pop dance songs in 'Shine' and 'Don't Mess With My Man' a couple of years back and they return at the top of their game with perhaps a little more of an electro bent. Great, top five.

Clark
Totems Flare
new single
Yes - a top notch, ear catching, body shaking, floor quaking, throbbing splurge of gruesome dancefloor sound. Both tracks are top quality. 'Rainbow Voodoo' is s-s-s-sspoooky (is that Quantum Jump's Tonto/Lone Ranger voice ... no? Close though) and 'Look Into The Heart Now' with sonic crescendo of an electronic finale is an excellent atmosphere setter. As the PR reads...
Following a string of acclaimed records, Clark (aka Chris Clark) is poised to break through with his forthcoming album 'Totems Flare', released July 13th on Warp Records. It's his boldest album yet, a mesh of breakneck dance music, baroque melodics and driving techno. Here are two cuts from the album, the frenetic 'Rainbow Voodoo' and 'Look into the Heart Now'. Londoners saw him headline Koko's album launch show on Sat 4th July unleashing these two upfront tracks. His recent work's been called 'the best dance music we've heard in 2009' (Clash) and 'an experimental treat of innovative and thoughtful club music' (iDJ)

Franz Ferdinand
Can't Stop Feeling
new single 6 July
Another fine tune from the Franz. The boys seem to be struggling as many are with the change in the way the charts are compiled but their album is a fine work and this really deserves top ten status so here's hoping. Good tune

frYars
Olive Eyes
new single 14 September
frYars does seem to inhabitr a parallel universe, there's an unusual inspiration behind his off-beat music. 'Olive Eyes' is full of oblique references to childhood and fatherly things, it's very strange "These eyes are a problem of mine, oh God I would beg for forgiveness for eyes divine .... The night is young, refrain from lighting this begot familiar face ... he'll have my eyes, my Olive Eyes". A sweet tune with frYars deep vocal in a Japan-esque style oriental Big In Japan sounding rhythm track, so different it could catch on big time.

Letting Mama Go
Titled but Unlabelled Promo

Hmmm well this is a turnup ... it's Abba's 'Mama Mia' re-written .. or is it ... is this a sample of those familiar keyboard notes and chorale vocals .. it's definately an indie tune now but I hope they've got permission from the Two Bennies, err sorry Benny & Bjorn. I've just been reading how they only agreed to Madonna sampling Gimme Gimme Gimme for Hung Up when she sent a personal begging letter ... ah it's tough at the top eh?

Little Boots
Remedy
new single 17 August
"I can see you stalking like a predator I've been here before... dancing is my remedy ..." Superb song, five great mixes here, the radio edit, Rusko's Big Trainers, the wonderfully upbeat A1 Bassline Get Hype, Disco Bloodbath and the Crazy Cousinz Remix.

The Mission District
So Over You
new single 10 August
Montreal five piece The Mission District are guesting on the Elliot Minor tour with 'So Over You' the first single taken from their forthcoming 'Youth Games' album. Catchy chorus
"You'll never change my mind, there's nothing that can take it away, I'm so over you, and all the things that you do..." sits well alongside Metro Station's 'Shake It'. Mission District headline their own tour in September in Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Dublin, Bristol, Birmingham, Oxford, Colchester, Nottingham, Liverpool and London Barfly. With a little luck.. top forty

Sharam & Kid Cudi
She Came Along
new single 24 August
Sharam's new single is a bit of a surprise. You may expect an imposing dancefloor anthem but far from it, a mellow gently jiggling tune with Kid Cudi's intriguing rap centre stage alongside a haunting female vocal... yep it is haunting, it's Sharam's clever sample of Patsy Kline. This is a classic slow burner, big hit written all over it, eight weekly plays on Pete Tongs Radio One show and a kind of bizarre loose vocal which make it a stand-out track. Top Ten.

Skunk Anansie
Tear The Place Up
new single 27 July
Wow this is a storming comeback single packed with ultra energy, really raw. 150bpm and a blistering vocal, a superb performance by Skin gets top marks here however, it'll be very interesting to see how her fans react to this new tune and how much airplay the track gets. Fingers crossed, great tune

Wild Beasts
Hooting & Howling
new single 20 July
Leeds based four piece Wild Beasts return with their usual eccentric recipe of uniqueness. Their second album 'Two Dancers' is due on 3rd August and from it comes 'Hooting & Howling', an apt title for a quirky trademark sound which surely must sooner or later edge into the mainstream. With Hayden Thorpes falsetto vocal and Benny Little choice guitarwork these guys are right on the edge and there is a big pop sensibility factor .. hit maybe.

This week's Top 40 ...

Top 40 Sun 5 Jul 09

Cascada boost straight to the top with umpteen different mixes available on iTunes etc, each one counting for a single sale toward Natalie Horner, DJ Manian and Yanou's first UK chart-topper. 'Evacuate the Dancefloor', the title track of their new album released this week and is the first of Cascada's three albums with no cover versions.

With seven new entries Michael Jackson increases his top forty presence from 6 to 13!

Truly remarkable, and an event which has led to Smash Hits owners Bauer smelling the colour of money and issuing a special 52 page special to celebrate The King Of Pop's life. Smash Hits magazine ran from 1979 until poor sales led to it's demise in 2006. Now what money can I get on a Top Of The Pops special?

Houses in order
Just the other day my local bank honcho was remarking on how close we came to all the banks closing last Autumn.
How close?

Ten minutes.

No matter what your politics are or aren't you can't fail to notice we are in a period of extreme change.
If you have the patience to attune to the breath-taking turn of events this has become another age of the great lie, the king's new clothes even.
The most outrageous enormous lies are being announced with an air of complete dis-connected disdain.
Today I'm reading on bbc.co.uk about social housing.
Government Ministers say they will build another 20,000 affordable homes in addition to the 90,000 already promised.
Government voices argue there's no unfairness in the housing system system against local people.
So why are they changing the system if there's nothing wrong with it.
That lie has run for twelve years.
Why do I find myself thinking of recent changes to employment law to allow directed positive discrimination.
While there can not be anyone who has not suffered from being the subject of discrimination (ask the Queen about The Sex Pistols), can there ever be positive discrimination?
Discrimination is discrimination is discrimination. Someone gains, someone loses.
Full stop.
Come on, something is not right somewhere, somewhere there is a stinking rotting mammoth of a lie.
What about numbers?
They don't lie do they?
Well do they?
Official figures say there are four million waiting for homes on the housing list and according to more official government figures there have been 4.7 million migrants, new arrivals allowed to settle in the UK since 1997 - that equates to near ten per cent added to the entire population as it was then plus their newly UK borns.
So let's see where we are... to alleviate a housing shortage exacerbated with an average 391,000 new settlers per year over the past twelve years we're going to build 110,000 homes in the next twelve months.
How much did we pay one MP for a £1.50 toilet brush?
£36.
It's alarming.
The numbers, the pace of events, the pace of change without consent, it's rapidly stacking up and at such acceleration, the law of averages says something will give.

MI6 Pants
Hard to believe some of these stories of the mighty.
The Head of MI6 wears speedos, I know I read it on Facebook - it's not a state secret. Well phew for that. Think again James Bond, get yourself social networking, maybe that's what the FBI intended when they helped set it up. Our Top Secret Agent's social secrets revealed on Facebooks and MySpaces. You may remember the security services doing a recruitment drive in recent years by appearing more transparent ... that's right the secret service appearing more transparent ... eh? I kid ye not. And now with 'Sir' Alan Sugar newly co-opted into the ranks of our rulers, perhaps soon he'll be sitting next to Austin Powers and Mr Bean.

Ponder for a moment these trendy new initiatives and political correctnesses - is it possible we may be trying to re-invent the wheel.
