This week's post ...

Kate Nash
Kiss That Grrl
new single 28 June 2010
I'm sorry to say, I think this is going to struggle.... I don't know what it is... on the face of it, it's trendy enough... I think it's simply not such an attractive listen... it may struggle to pick up airplay. I admire Kate for using more nasty guitars on her latest batch of tunes... it's just it doesn't seem to gell that well... and perhaps the songs are a little too spartan, and lacking really good hooks. Anyways, sorry's hope I'm wrong, maybe the festival appearances will help.

Marina & The Diamonds
Oh No!
new single 26 July 2010
I luv her, Marina I luvs u... I paricularly like the Sanna & Pitron Edit of 'Oh No!' because they somehow manage to avoid clunsy key changes and make the song sound like it was written this way... so good is their interpretation to my ears it sounds like a top twenty hit!

Paul Weller
Find The Torch, Burn The Plans / Aim High

new double A-side single 14 June 2010
I bet fellow Red Wedgers Paul Weller and Billy Bragg have some heated debate.... Speaking about new single 'Find The Torch' Paul explained
"Thematically, it ties in with the title track of the album. We’ve got to reclaim our heritage and our culture. Claim it back from the fucking politicians and the establishment".
Recognition from the Modfather perhaps that there was something very wrong with the longed for thirteen years of Labour.. interesting use of the words
"our culture". Weller's five children are lucky to have such a perceptive logged on Dad, "My daughter (Leah) and her mate sang on it too.”
“Aim High was initially one phrase repeated over and over. I hit that falsetto voice, which was nice because I haven’t used it for a long time. Once I had the melody I wrote the words really quickly.”
Both "Find The Torch, Burn the Plans" & "Aim High" are taken from Paul’s massively acclaimed Number Two hit album “Wake Up The Nation” which was released on April 19th.

Russell Brand - Infant Sorrow
Just Say Yes
new single 21 June 2010
From the 'Get Him To The Greek' movie it's bizarre to hear the Sachs-liking Rasputin we know as Russel Brand
actually singing.... and not a bad effort either... a
spunky little punky pop tunette... I'd hazard a guess he'll be one of Wossy's first guests when Jonathan starts on ITV.... hit possibility.

Wilder
Girls vs Boys
new limited edition 7" single 26 July 2010
A charming little tune from Bristolian quartet and Rough Trade signings Wilder. This would have been a chart cert around Arctics time in 2006.... good as this is, it's striking that so few of this genre now make the top forty... the clicking of the r & b / grime machine with Rascal, Peas, Guetta and co as omnipresent as the indie monster once was. Good record, chart potential probably minimal although Wilder should pick up important airplay in their target media, Huw the Stephens already being impressed enough to grab them for a Radio One session.

This week's Goss ...

UK Top 40 Sun 20 Jun 10
Dizz holds onto top spot with... well it's one of the worst isn't it?

Oasis shoot straight to the top of the album chart with their hits collection... great value also if for a few quid more you can nab the special edition with three CD's and a DVD - the all 27 Oasis hits on two CD's along with their final concert with Noel on the third CD... together with vids, concert footage and 'commentary' on the DVD - excellent value.

Katy Perry's hard on 'California Gurls' with Snoop Dogg stays top Stateside.
