David Holmes
The Dogs Are Parading
new double album
The definitive David Holmes collection covering his premier work of the past two decades. Some thirty trax are featured on this compilation featuring collaborations with Weatherall, Lafayette, Too Fat, Mogwai and Kevin Shields. An essential addition for the collector.

IDC
Daytime Radio Hit
new single 26 July
'Daytime Radio Hit'... not... far too many f-words to edit or are there... sexy female vocals luring one into a false sense of security before the "Oh another thing, get the f+ck out of my..." whatever. Great rhythm track and this must have a chance of becoming a big club hit... You may have seen IDC support Calvin Harris or 2Many DJ's recently and this track is surprisingly neat. Hit potential.

Katy Perry
California Gurls - Remixes
new single 26 July 2010
Well what is there too add... USA's Billboard Number One for a second week, Number One on UK iTunes by Sunday night and now another four radio edits to add to the original two - MSTRKRFT, Manhattan Clique, Passion Pit and InnerPartySystem. The endangered species of the pop song has struck back with Katy Perry's twin bazookas with and without Snoop... the songs oozes freeway driving around LA... made for KIIS FM (California's Capital FM equivalent and superior). Here's a risky prediction for the soon to be Mrs Brand (Or if she follows our Opposition Leader Harriet Harman's finely blended example of incompetance masquerading as enlightenment... Mrs Perry) ... UK Number One!

Monarchy
Love Get Out Of My Way
new single 26 July
Another fast rising electro-duo release a top pop tunette. Monarchy's 126bpm 'Love Get Out Of My Way' comes in seven flavas remixed by Sinden, Holy Ghost, Tim Goldsworthy and Treasure Fingers. Hit potential.

Travie McCoy & Bruno Mars
Billionaire
new single 26 July
Why on earth would Katy Perry trade Travis McCoy for Russell Bland... maybe that's the inspiration for 'Billionaire'. McCoy is sooo cool, when Gym Class Heroes played to a packed Mad4it venue back in 2006 he stayed behind talking to fans and shaking hands... great band, great frontman and together with Bruno Mars this US Top Tenner should top ten in the UK too. I'm no fan of gratuitous use of the fuck word, I think both BoB are resisting a strong temptation to use it more often which must be a good thing... it's in the first line
"I wish I was a fuckin billionaire" and it's limp replacement "fickin" in the clean edit. Originally the word seemed to portrait anger and frustration, it seems to increasingly betray a lack of inspiration, moral ambition and possibly intelligence. Anyways, Top Ten... maybe Number One!

What happened next? Hear Uffie's 'Hong Kong Garden' on YouTube by clicking here

Uffie
Sex & Dreams & Denim Jeans
new album 31 May 2010

I like that picture... she'll need some help washing that off!
Although Floridian Parisienne Uffie seems to have been momentarily trumped by Ke$ha she's got a certain something about her.. maybe the Francais femme fatale eh...?
This is a fine album with some memorable tracks, not least the curtain raising 'Pop My Glock' of a couple of years back.. what 2006... it's flying again...
the strangely titled 'A.D.D. S.U.V.' featuring Pharrell
and the 'MC's Can Kiss' single.
Really liking Uff's up-beat elctro stomping cover of Siousxie's 'Hong Kong Garden'.
Definately worth a closer look!!!

This week's Goss ...

UK Top 40 Sun 13 Jun 10
Dizz gets his fifth UK number one... he's nearing Westlife sustainability here.... the England charge straight to the top with 'Shout'... 'Three Lions 96' at 10, England New Order 'World In Motion' at 22,Terry Venables at 23 (Elvis will be turning when he hears 'If I Can Dream' rather murdered by El Tel) and Lily Allen's Dad Keith Fat Les 'Vindaloo' at 32.... The World Cup's getting more and more like Christmas.

Christina Aguilera's 'Bionic' goes straight to the top of the UK Albums.

Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg hit the top Stateside with 'California Gurls' while B.o.B./Bruno Mars now has three of America's Top Ten - 'Nothin On You', 'Airplanes' with Paramore's Hayley Williams and 'Billionaire' with Katy Perry's ex Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. All rather incestuous over there so thank heavens for Ellie Jackson who at last gives the UK an American presence with La Roux and 'Bulletproof' hanging on at 10.

No dis-respect to Algeria and not forgetting the 'Three Lions' injury curse has hit again - but much as we'd like to see England win the World Cup there is something very unsettling about watching some of the world's best paid players so obviously struggling. Must be nerves eh?

So Blackpools first game in the top flight since 1971 will be Wigan... Blackpool v Wigan in The Premier League. Brilliant! Meanwhile Cardiff City's first fixture of 2010/11 will be Sheffield United at home. The Swansea v Cardiff Welsh derby will be played in Cardiff in November and Swansea in February. We await with excitement the Blue Square Premier League Fixtures for Newport County and their first Welsh derby with Wrexham since 1988.

Cardiff Barfly
Posted Tuesday 15th June 2010
It's a year since we moved on from Cardiff Barfly and it's genuinely sad to see it looking so 'rudder-less'.
People often ask me what happened there?
The truth is, it was impossible for me to find out.... not even the person/persons responsible for the near year long removal of the DJ booth would reveal themselves... the same Landlord of three years is there so it's hard to accept he wouldn't have had first hand knowledge of the decision.
Back in 2002 one of the Barfly's 'trendies' thought they could diversify and pull greater numbers by hiring the venue to High Contrast - presumably they thought the Drum & Bass crowd would come. Well that plan was aborted when with roughly the same attendance the bar-take was £2k down on their normal 'Madchester' bar because as they discovered too late, the drum and bass customers weren't heavy drinkers like the Indie kids. We tried Hip-Hop but their fans didn't seem to feel comfortable in a guitar based live music venue.
Except for Barfly's Hammertime, the venue has this year taken the decision to dispense almost completely with a loyal and regular indie/alternative following, aiming instead for a Techno / Dub-Beat crowd.
The problem with heading in this direction is these audiences are well catered for elsewhere in Cardiff's night life in night club's with superior facilities and they have been forever - a quick glance at the info and recent photos for their Saturday club night 'Ghosts' on Facebook (Google Ghosts club night Cardiff) doesn't give the impression that the club was anywhere near full.
So whereas in previous years, the venue got some amazing
figures throughout the quiet Summer months with a familiar schedule when 30,000 students leave Cardiff and head home this years line-up looks as sparse as could be... and the problem with leaving it so late to fill schedules is people make other plans and the expectation of good things or even consistency from the venue is diminished.
Shame. After all Barfly have done for live music in South Wales, I wish them good luck, they seem to need it right now.
Here's the line-up...
