UK Top 40Sun 26 Dec 10
For the first time the best selling single of the year has not been number one on the UK's weekly singles chart... Radio One who today played the chart five days before the end of the year have announced that 'Love The Way You Lie' the number two hit from Eminem & Rihanna (also the years longest top forty runner with 27 weeks in) has beaten X-Factor winner Matt Cardle to win the UK's record of the year title... except Matt could yet overtake Em & Rihanna... unlike Radio One to get it so wrong, a bit like FIFA's plan to move the World Cup from Summer to Winter to help Qatar, there must be something really good on New Years Eve to warrant bringing the year end forward... oh yeah it's Huw Stephens and he "beats fighting the crowds in the sales anyday..." followed by Scott Mills Top 40 Floorfillers of 2010, Annie Mac, Pete Tong Got Power, and Tiesto... aye not great, not bad, average
The hype can't hide the facts... the UK's music industry is taking a real battering right now... after thirteen years of Labour the 2010 year end Top 40 has been nearly 'ethnically clensed' of UK acts... with only ten of the forty best-sellers of the year originating from these shores... four UK number ones by Dizzee Rascal and Roll Deep didn't sell enough to be included in the top forty... when Labour was in charge of our 'Culture' the party virtually abandoned the UK's Brit-pop for grime and R&B - presumably in their efforts to redress a perceived imbalance in social justice through Labour artificially enlarged the importance of minority music as featured on BBC Radio One Extra etc and dimished the importance of the UK's traditional pop and art... even X-Factor has only managed three of the top forty with Matt Cardle at 2, Helping Haiti at 10 and Cheryl Cole at 40... it's hard to see much changing with few UK acts having the amunition to upgrade and reverse the trend be they grime/UK rnb or indie rock... Meanwhile the USA has 23 of Britain's Top 40 of 2010 (25 if we include Rihanna) leaving a further seven trax from the new Global thing...
Matt stays top of the UK Singles for a second week while Take That head towards two million sales of their 'Progress' album while clinching a sixth week on top of the UK Albums.
Katy Brand... err Perry stays top in the USA for a second week with 'Firework'.

Fresh from their Xfm South Wales embarrassment of 2008, Capital radio Group or Global Radio to give it it's current name seems to have given up on the idea of local radio more or less completely... of course they will still want to raid local advertisers purses or perhaps they've been sacrificed for national advertisers too... As if no one from Cardiff / South Wales has ever been to London and switched on 95.8FM... here's what Dead Dragon's website says on it's last day... "We have been working on a brand new name and look for 2011 and we are proud to announce that from January we will be available across South Wales with our new name Capital FM!".... It is funny isn't it?... and Real Radio Wales goes 'National' that is Real Radio Wales goes national to Wales... I thought it was, it's website has said it is for a couple of years... and lastly hi to former 'Young Person Of The Year' Craig Williams and little Afan FM... Afan FM in Port Talbot is changing it's name to XS... sounds familiar somehow. Good luck one and all... try to remember the listeners somewhere in your plans!
