Cosmo Jarvis
Gay Pirates
new single March 2011
The first single from Cosmo Jarvis new album 'Is The World Strange Or Am I'... "Yo ho Sebastian we deserve much better than we've had...." Very much along the lines of Mumford & Sons successful attack on the 2010 music scene and a thoroughly enjoyable listen telling the story of two male lovers facing discrimination in the inhospitable and far from accepting social climate of the pirate heyday... yes as we continue to re-write the history books Cosmo's in on the act in a way that should impress Sean Locke who is receiving much jovial aclaim for his new reality tv show idea whereby he - the totally straight, red blooded female shagging male is delivered into a gay male household to sort out his life, you know - two more days in those socks etc..."Yo ho Sebastian.... This water is too salty for me to even drink, I'd rather walk the dreaded plank than stay another week". Top stuff, it'd improve any radio show.
Funeral Party
Finale
new single 17 January 2011
Another upbeat bass laden indie anthem from Los Angeles three piece Funeral Party... I hope this picks up the airplay they deserve and dents the bastion of grime-ness that has become the radio One Extra takeover of Radio one's Chart Show. A kickin' indie anthem, top stuff!
Here's the pr... East LA three-piece Funeral Party are pleased to announce the release of brilliant new single “Finale” on January 17th. Their eagerly awaited debut album “The Golden Age Of Nowhere” will follow a week later on the 24th with a full UK tour in support of the release at the start of 2011. (full dates below). Southeast of Los Angeles, beyond the Hollywood sign and Scientology centres and porn-bodied beach bunnies, lies the city of Whittier. Here, if you happen to form a band as a means of escape, you may see someone getting stabbed in front of the stage you’re playing on. Funeral Party? Quite literally sometimes. Which makes the band’s sudden leap this summer from cult local Whittier heroes to Radio One playlist-busting pop stars all the more remarkable. The nucleus of the band, Chad, plus guitarist James Torres and bassist Kimo Kauhola, (they’re now a five-piece, with keyboardist Tim Madrid and a new drummer) were high school friends, who drifted into the Whittier backyard scene after leaving school. Basically, with little money about, and with nowhere to spend it anyway, locals began having parties in their backyards, and bands naturally began to form to play them. That was a mere two years ago. Word spread fast about the band mainly due to the mania of their live shows, but also to the way they quickly transcended the hardcore and metal on the scene, and wrote catchy, dance songs which touched on influences like The Cure (their got their name from a song on ‘Faith’), At The Drive In, and even The Human League. The immediate result of the development of their “disco-punk” sound was that Lars Stalfors, engineer to the Mars Volta, asked them to record at their studio. A series of eye-catching gigs on both sides of the Atlantic followed, before the band bagged a crucial support slot with Julian Casablancas. Julian would tell the crowd “this band are the future”. Bringing us onto now and a support slot with 30 Seconds to Mars on their UK tour giving people the first sign that they belong in front of big crowds. “We want to show people something new, and give audiences something that can remember,” Chad says. Funeral Party are here to restore your faith in rock bands.

Huski
Wartime Widow
new single 26 December 2010
Really liking Huski, a tight London electronic duo perfectly formed along the lines of Goldfrapp and The Eurythmics. 'Wartime Widow' is a fine pop song which should have no trouble cracking the top forty... if the track gets the prominence it deserves... and it should be a surefire pick for the quiet period after Christmas... but then again... there's so much dosh behind X-Factor and the like... whatever happens this is a top track! |
Here's the pr.... On December 26th, Huski will unleash their new single 'Wartime Widow', a three track collection of fresh material, lead to battle with the infectious title track and backed with an exclusive b-side and a brand new remix. 'Wartime Widow', taken from the forthcoming album 'Strangelove', is another shock-pop gem cut to perfection by Pike and Maple Bee. Both upbeat and seductively dreamy, 'Wartime Widow' is a powerful introduction to the Huski sound world with equal parts thrash guitar, bounding drums and bitter-sweet vocals. The b-side track, 'Sleep's Over', is a brand new song heard for the first time on this single and unavailable anywhere else. It's a languishing, full-bodied orchestral ballad that weaves around Bee's melancholy vocals and shows off Huski's softer side. Finally, there's a remix of 'Wartime Widow' by Brighton producer, Enjoyed, who strips down the original and rebuilds it in the form of a Joy Orbison style 2-step electronic trip. Enjoyed, who has also completed remixes of Crazy P and fellow blog-trotter Seams, has focused his attention on the Huski ethereality and shows it off with a refreshingly different palate of beats and melodies. The band have also been broadcasting some of their live shows on Ustream, along with their weekly interactive rehearsals. They continue to broadcast regularly in the run up to the release of 'Strangelove'.

Not sure this debut direction is helpful... around 70bpm, chartbound and this gal is sharp... in fact she's got razors in her lips so watch out!
Andrew O'Neill - Occult Comedian
Showreel
new DVD to be confirmed 2011
I hope he'll release an audio cd soon... you can see him in Bath today (Thursday 2 December) and Cardigan tomorrow (Friday 3 December) - details below. And yeh this guy's on the cutting edge... the occult comedian.... five showcase tracks here...
the Melbourne Festival 2010 shows him on top form with some great left field gags "I'm not being racist, but does this bus go to...?" and 'touching things with bargepoles'... top material. The Saxondale sketch was good... lots of detailed tweeter speaker fax and a theft at the end... Not a fan of the Breakdown of Society short film, are Cannon & Ball to blame? While they weren't particularly funny neither is this... Disney's pride The Jonas Brothers (they're for infants aren't they?) It's like including Basil Brush in the routine, they're not really worth a mention in the adult world never mind the offer of a £10,000 booty to rape the three of them because of their fundamentalist Christian beliefs... you do become aware that joke-lines at the expense of Christians are not presently being targetted at at least one other religion, so perhaps Christians need to recruit a champion like O'Neill to launch a fightback - I get the impression he could be a closet Christian... of course he could really launch up occult street and be the first comedian to target the nameless but I doubt he'd risk life and limb in that way... Christians are easy targets aren't they? So, so much for O'Neill's occult bravado there.... what would have been really funny with the Sonisphere stage dive is if the crowd had parted like the red sea... no? Anyway, here's to the new wave
of sort of left wing devil-worshipping death metal funny people. 8 out of 10.
Here his pr... After performing to massive crowds across the summer at the Download, Sonisphere and Bloodstock festivals, Andrew takes his stand up show on the road for 25 dates across the country. After four successful solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, three national tours and a sell out Soho Theatre run of his show 'Occult Comedian' this tour is a must see. Andrew's surreal, political style has attracted the masses year on year in Edinburgh, and as such has given him a ferocious cult following. His interest in all things dark and mysterious includes performing regular walking tours of Jack The Ripper's murder sites with an adapted version of his controversial, and in hindsight, his wholly inaccurate live show, 'Winston Churchill was Jack The Ripper'. His critically acclaimed 'Andrew O'Neill's Totally Spot-On History of British Industry' led to a Chortle Award nomination for Best Breakthrough act in 2009.
'Occult Comedian' is a show where whimsy meets the mysterious side of life. The perfect place to find a man in pink stockings conversing about Aleister Crowley. Acidic yet humble, it's not hard to see why Andrew has attracted such a loyal audience. Whilst inter-mingling his routines with enthusiastic comic monologues, his show unreels information and humour, detailing events such as interviewing eccentric Watchman author Alan Moore. A show that is hilarious and informative, yet cannot fail to leave you thinking 'Just don't mention The Jonas Brothers'.
Andrew can be seen musically leading the UK Steampunk scene [NME] with his band, The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing. Andrew has also opened for Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls and has performed stand-up at the Download and Sonisphere festivals. Andrew has also performed at Leicester Comedy Festival, Brighton Comedy Festival Fringe and at the Camden Crawl. This year Andrew appeared at the Adelaide Fringe, and both the Melbourne and New Zealand International Comedy Festivals.
Andrew O'Neill has starred alongside Steve Coogan in Saxondale [BBC 2], and is a regular guest on Sky News and BBC Radio Five Live. His radio credits include The Milk Run [BBC Radio 1], starring alongside Josie Long, Isy Suttie and Danielle Ward. He has recently signed a DVD deal with PIAS Comedy.

THE CRITICS ON OCCULT COMEDIAN
... wholly personal, fascinating stuff, original and left-field to the point of bumping into the perimeter fence. A charming, genuine stage presence do not leave Edinburgh without hearing him. THE SCOTSMAN
... a fine combination of revealing his eccentricities, explaining them, and mocking them, all at once he's the occultist transvestite grindcore fan you could take home to meet your mother. CHORTLE ****
... a genuine wit and wonderfully entertaining, a very entertaining hour. THREE WEEKS ****
... the incongruity between the subject matter and his own, fairly disarming persona allows much of his comedy to work very well indeed. FEST ****
... O'Neill packs in more gags and info than anyone else on the circuit I doubt you will find a funnier (and more thought-provoking) hour a Must-See Show. THE STAGE
... for want of a far pithier clich, Andrew ONeill just keeps getting better and better. THE FIX
UK Top 40Sun 21 Nov 10
Check out our tune of the week from Japanese Pop Stars - 'Let Go' a quite wonderfully nasty 130bpm chugger of an indie electro vocoder sort of soundclash with a captivating video animation.
The Beatles settled their difference with name thieves Apple and finally their catalogue (all except 'Live At the Hollywood Bowl') is available on iTunes so... welcome back 'Hey Jude' originally number one in 1968, top ten again in 1976 and back in 2010 at 40
The Beebs Children In Need chosen ones... JLS not surprisingly go straight to Number One deposing Rihanna's 'Only Girl' which slips to 4... last week's American chart-topper from Rihanna with Drake 'What's My Name' drops to 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 while entering the UK Singles at 18. It looks like JLS stay at the top will be a short one with (sick) for the third year the X-Factor Finalists blazing yet another download of soul-less cash to Simon Cowell's wallet - this year it's David Bowie's 'Heroes' that's being desecrated.
Far East Movement 'Like A G6' goes back to the top Stateside and enters in the UK at 6 while ominously Glee Cast return with a first week entry at 8 in America with their cover of Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'... Glee's 'The Music - The Christmas Album' is released next week - we have been warned!
Near top of the world Take That - their single 'The Flood' stuck at 2 but they did beat Rihanna's 'Loud' and hurtle into the album chart at Number One with 'Progress'.
Congrats to Ellie Goulding whose version of Elton John's 'Your Song' features in a TV commercial and climbs from 39 to 3.
Bless him, Ole Tinchy Stryder seems to be struggling all of a sudden... his new album 'Third Strike' has delivered two top forty tracks in the weeks since it's release... the happy go lucky 'Second Chance' with Taio Cruz peaking at 22 with just one week in and this week the gruesome 'Game Over' with an entire grime crew struggles in at the same number - 22.
Intersting to see Fame Academy 2003 runner-up Alistair Griffin in at 38 - highly praised by Robin Gibb as a unique song-writing talent at the time he was beaten in the final of the doomed show by Alex Parks after a contentious 'vote for Alex' outburst from the then star of the year Daniel Bedingfield - a pop star previously diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). The unlucky Bedingfield was left with severe head and neck injuries after being nearly killed in a car crash on New Year's Day 2004 and has struggled to get his life back since.

Earliest freeze since... how old's the planet.... Cardiff at -7C last night... around 85F inside the club... everything was wet! Here's the latest devastating news on the hot planet from the BBC...
Mid Wales recorded the lowest temperatures in the UK on Saturday night as bitter cold continued to bite.
Llysdinam in Powys saw -17.3C (0.86F), which is both the lowest ever recorded in Wales in November, and the lowest in the UK during the month since 1985.
Another Powys weather station at Tirabad, south of Llanwrtyrd Wells, saw a new local record of -14.3C (6F).
That made Wales colder than Greenland, with the chill continuing next week, and more snow possible from Tuesday.
Michael Dukes of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "You are seeing some ridiculously low temperatures - it has been a bit like it is in the middle of Scandinavia. "There should be a bit more of a breeze over the next day or two, which will not feel quite as extreme. But then we might see temperatures threaten -20C (-4F) in the Scottish glens later. This is certainly an extraordinary cold snap."
The all-time lowest recorded daily minimum temperature in Wales was also in Powys, on 21 January, 1940, when Rhayader saw -23.3C (-9.94F). Express v Europe

Significant events are happening... we could again be moments away from banking chaos... political turmoil looks likely... socialist worker students rioting... an opposition leader sponsored by the Unite union which has just elected an extreme left wing militant tendency man to be their chief... a prime minister up for the battle... and at last a daily newspaper with the courage to step out of line - brave enough to represent what has always been the majority public view on The European Union.
"Get Britian Out Of Europe" The Daily Express says vowing "From this day forth our energies will be directed to furthering the cause of those who believe Britain is Better Off Out."
It will represent another coalition, a cross party grouping of Labour/Lib Dem/Tory disenfranchised and other patriots who have been denied their say - who have been frankly ignored... and now they will apparently have a loud mainstream voice.
Check the Daily Express leader for their reasoning by clicking here.
Simon Amstell
Posted Tuesday 23nd November 2010 - Source BBC.co.uk
Stand up comic time on BBC1 this morning and that 1979 vintage Gants Hill boy Simon Amstell was at it again, being offensive in the name of comedy "I've got to shut up now because Russel's coming on with his tumour..." He left Buzzcocks he said, because he got bored with it. Fair enough, but did you know he'd been previously sacked for making pop stars uncomfotable... from 2000 to 2006 he presented Popworld on Channel 4 with Miquita Oliver. He voiced the characters "Timothy the Popworld melon" and "Richard the Popworld horse". On Popworld he developed a highly ironic, surreal and left field style which gained the show a cult following, but angered many of its guests. One such example was a mock interview with singer Lemar called "Lemar From Afar" in which Amstell shouted questions into a megaphone from one end of the world's largest car park while Lemar stood at the other end. Another was a "Si-chiatrist" interview with Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris of The Kooks in which Amstell played the role of psychiatrist and Pritchard and Harris his patients. This section was dropped when Pritchard revealed after the interview that he had recently been diagnosed with mental health problems, and thought Simon was a real psychiatrist. During his time at Popworld, Amstell was at the centre of several controversies, including making Britney Spears cry after asking her if she thought she'd "gone a bit nuts". It's thought he turned down an opportunity to interview Iron Mike Tyson... on the advice of his psychiatrist.

Cardiff City Centre's legendary record store Spillers tell us that on Tuesday 23rd of November (tomorrow) TV and radio star Phill Jupitus will be popping in to drink (and make!) tea and generally be charming to customers... "Expect till mayhem, recommends, tea (bring a flask!) and cake (where's my pinny?) Phill's in the area to promote his new book 'Good Morning Nantwich: Adventures in Breakfast Radio'. He should be in mid morning but look out for twitter.com/spillersrecords updates for any more news....and follow @jupitisphillip too! |
