this week's post ...

Asher Roth
I Love College
new single 20 April
"Your time isn't wasted when you're getting wasted, I dance my face off and had this one girl completely naked ... I Love College". Here comes the new American hip-hop star Asher Roth, tipped by many 50 Cent, Kanye, Akon, Ludacris and it's easy to hear why on this 87bpm tune. Asher's voice sounds immediately warm and intimate, like a lazy lob, like a sleepy Will Smith. So laid back, kinda Jurasic Five-ish. Yeh this is a good single, and I like the Dirty version too! No surprise there. Look out for his album 'Asleep In The Bread Aisle' due on 20 April.

Billy Boy On Poison
Drama Junkie Queen - Sampler

These guys are 17 and have been learning their trade on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles. Named after Billy Boy Poison, a character in Anthony Burgess 'A Clockwork Orange' , this is an accomplished debut, five edgy indie type tracks, raucous even. The 142bpm 2 minutes 40 seconds 'On My Way' , the 144bpm 'Saturdays Child', 154bpm 'Standing Still' then the more subtle 93bpm 'Four Leaf Clover' with it's illuminating line about her "seeing her new shtrink" ... not quite UK yet, then again... finally the 80bpm 'Angry Young Man' with a pretty interesting effect on the vocal and intriguing lyric. Good start

Frankmusik
Better Off As Two
new single 13 April
Island Records signing and 23 year old Thornton Heath college drop-out Frankmusik makes good ... new tune 'Better Off As Two' comes in five mixes here with Kissy Sell Out, Math Head and Fan Death on duty . Yes it's a good 119bpm debut with mixes upping the ante to around 130bpm and our Frank should raise some interest

Depeche Mode
Wrong
new single 6 April
Martin Gore has penned the first single from Depeche Mode's new album 'Sounds Of The Universe'. Produced by Ben Hillier of Doves, Elbow and Blur credit it's a solemn 81bpm, 'Wrong' is a horror vid, the subject seems to be in perpetual nightmare "Wrong place, wrong time". Depeche Mode have a good point when they say they're bigger and have received little recognition from The Brits, but Pet Shop Boys have. Why? It can only be because DM are on the small independent record label Mute. A fine return

The Gaslight Anthem
Great Expectations
new single 23 March
Kerrang favourites The Gaslight Anthem release their new album 'The 59 Sound' on 23 March, from it their new single 'Great Expectations' Powering along at 260bpm it's a short sweet 2mins 40secs that should get their year into gear for their support slot on the Bruce Springsteen tour at his Hyde Park concert on 28 June. Mmm should pick up indie/alt/rock airplay easily enough

Lady GaGa
Poker Face Remixes
new single 13 April
Oh this is a great song and the remixes here are superb. A song about the shrewd manipulative playing of the 'Poker Face'. The tunes already been selling for a couple of months and stands at number three both here and Stateside this week, and these new mixes should lengthen it's stay considerably. We rather like the Space Cowboy remix, but any of the nine featured here are fine.. brilliant ... kitten of the year

Star Pilots
In The Heat Of The Night
new single 20 April
Three guys from Sweden on Basshunter's label 'Hard2Beat' : Scott Mills loves it : nine mixes : a good pop song : strong production : nine mixes from the 127bpm UK Radio Edit & Wawa Edit to the 145bpm Headhunters remix. This sounds like a pretty big hit to me in the Eric Prydz vein but with a song included. I'd say err top ten

77 years ago.. The first ever Gold Record was presented to Glenn Miller for 'Chatanooga Choo Choo', a Billboard number one from the movie 'Sun Valley Serenade'. Oozing with joie de vivre in the new world of Hollywood glamour, it became the first million seller in fifteen years during the Second World War just as Japan bombed Pearl Harbour. The USA declared war and always a perfect gentleman and a 'model pop star' Miller immediately offered his services to bolster moral. The US Army turned him down but The US Navy accepted him. In Summer 1944 he was sent to London to entertain the troops. Aged 40 in December 1944 he was presumed dead when his plane disappeared over The English Channel. He was on his way to play for the soldiers who had liberated Paris.

All aboard, it's the vid for Glenn Millers 1941 'Chatanooga Choo Choo'

What's The Point
Here's something to do if you've the money and inclination. Move to a new area and set about destroying it. Look especially for a millionaire apartment near a live music venue. All the better if it's been ten years in the making: it's management painstakingly creating a reputation for quality, negotiating it's way onto the circuit, progressively attracting major names to the 500 capacity shows. Even better if there's no other independent venue of the type in the City. When you're happily moved in to your new acquisition, complain about the venue, get the council to run them through the mill on sound proofing. If you're able to jeopardise the livelihoods of all who work there so much the better. It's a double whammy, you'll scupper all the help the business is giving by being a focal point for the live music community. If you play your cards really well you'll get the venue closed down and owing £100k in the process. Then you can feel really chuffed with yourself.

The closure of The Point in Cardiff Bay, a superb live music venue is a great loss. There are too few locally owned businesses of this type and we know how hard the owners and management worked to create a vibrant venue. Shame on those responsible for its closure. Official website statement

Another longstanding City destination bit the dust this week. The Taurus Steak House closed after thirty years, the owner blaming Council led pedestrianisation, the St.Davids 2 building works and the "violent disorder - no go zone" that's been created at the top of St. Mary Street with the alcohol frenzy our fantastic government's have facilitated.

Hey everybody, another million unemployed by the end of the year...

Hell hath no ...
