this week's post ...

Esser
Head Lock Remix
new single 27 April
Ben Esser has something a little different here ".. oh you've got me in a headlock", a very uniquely put together sound which stands out from the crowd. 'Headlock' was first released last year and is now re-mixed by Spike Stent, Big Pink & James Rutledge. The accompanying video is a little joyous but risque affair inspired surely by Britney Spears 'Baby One More Time' school outfit. Very good, with a little luck top forty

Maximo Park
The Kids Are Sick Again
new single
Maximo Park are back with a great record here. The 151bpm 'The Kids Are Sick Again' an altrernative Summer anthem should see Top Twenty success with ease.

Morrissey
Something Is Squeezing My Skull
new single 27 April
It's Morrissey travelling 156bpm short and sweet, another excellent single which proves he is still at the top of his game

Papercuts
Future Primitive
new single
San Francisco's Papercuts begin this track with a bass feel like the classic Ace 'How Long' and then it changes into an intriguing 90bpm listen highlighted by the bass and falsetto vocal. Three tasty remixes by The Go Team, The Ruby Suns and a neat 118bpm dancefloor effort from Londoners Django Django

Red Light Company
Meccano
re-released single
Much interest in this excellent new band, with the main supermarkets displaying their brilliant album. Previous single 'Arts & Crafts' whet many appetites for more and I wouldn't be surprised if it was re-released and struck the big time later this year. The three minute 127bpm 'Meccano' was released last year when the band played a couple of Friday night shows at Cardiff Barfly, a fine band, superb material and deserving of success.

Team Waterpolo
Room 44
new single
Team Waterpolo return with another catchy song, the 142bpm 'Room 44' picks up where they left off. Airplay friendly and upbeat, perhaps not the most adventurous new tune but catchy enough to grow

White Light Parade
Wake Up
new single
White Light Parade's new song comes with two distinctly different versions. The Vocal Up Mix is your standard 165bpm rocked up arrangement and then taking a leaf out of the Cage The Elephant repertoire there's an 80bpm Reggae Mix. I'm not sure the vocals are as strong as they could be but what the hell, it's a charming little tune

This week's Top 40 ...

Top 40 Sun 22 Mar 09

Wow.. for a second single available on an album and as a download Lady GaGa is number one.. and this is weeks before the excellent Space Cowboy remix is out. It goes to prove the strength of the song and the way the singles chart is reflecting the popularity of a hit more so than it has for fifteen years.

20 year old Elly Jackson aka La Roux leads the charge of the new tunes at 11. Pet Shop Boys are back at 14, the Slumdog Millionaire Oscar winning song 'Jai Ho' is in at 20, Franz Ferdinand at 27 and Enrique & Ciara from his Greatest Hits CD at 30.

Valleys Radio RIP?
UTV says it's asked Ofcom on four occasions to move Ebbw Vale to Swansea. Seemingly unable to understand why this is not possible they've decided to give Ofcom their licence back if no-one wants to buy it ... so Valleys Radio may exit the radio world ... more from South Wales Argus

GWR RIP
Not the great pre British Rail railway company, but a radio company many radio professionals looked on as the nadir of creative radio, GWR bites th
e dust this week. For much of its time it was led by former social worker Steve Orchard and then Australian demagogue Dirk Anthony. With it's three links an hour, ten second maximum cue card fayre that eventually swallowed up Capital Radio Group it's probably no great loss really. However it does emphasise a new chapter where Heart will be rolled out from London to many former local radio stations. Independent Local Radio having died a death some may feel entirely due to a lack of creative management. There are plenty of talented presenter types who deserve the opportunity to entertain their locality, all too often it doesn't happen because the boss is shagging an irrelevant - literally and figuratively.
Now we've arrived in Boxticker Land it seems increasingly obvious that the best people are not getting the jobs... Sir Fred.

Hey Hey
No exemption to the crunch, except Sir Fred of The Prince's Trust & RBS that is, even Asda are cutting staff hours. Uncut magazine, an excellent publication in difficulty? The April 2009 edition has twenty pages less than previous months. Now a special offer 12% discount if
subscribers gift a friend. Grim in Hayward's Heath too.

We're The Monkees
Congratulations to Cardiff University on a successful tender to the BBC for a £20,000 project to research Dr Who's benefit to humanity ... on that alone I we must be due a refund of something

BBC Police
Unlucky Apprentice applicants who are fired by Alan Sugar will then face an inquisition from Adrian Chiles. Contestants should beware of making idle banter,
Chiles who has a holiday cottage in South Wales is closely connected with the thought police - ask Carol Thatcher.

Mr Lennon
'Revolution' or 'Power To The People', a couple of John Lennon songs in conflict or are they? Revolutionary is not a word you'll hear connected with our Government too often but there cannot be an area of our lives they've felt it unnecessary to tamper with. Why? Yes, there was a landslide majority for New Labour in 1997, it wasn't a vote to sex up war-mongering. It wasn't a vote to put Herr Brown in charge of The Ministry Of Truth. Gordon content to magic carpet to power on Tony Blair's reflected glory, such that it was, has not yet allowed himself to be put in a position where public approval seems to matter. Why even mention it? The history of mass popular music and art is inextricably entwined with the politic of the day, from Chaplin to Brecht to Public Enemy, from Lennon to Weller and stop .... where to now?
