this week's post ...

Animal Collective
My Girls
new single
Phew this is a strange track. On Domino Records too, Arctic Monkeys label. With an intro sounding like an echoed sample of Candi Staton & The Source's 'You Got The Love' and counting down on 5 minutes 3o seconds .... enter strange, weird indecipherable vocals... two minutes in - the beginning of a drum track ... nope sorry.. just a technically fab production of haunting repetitive keyboard and monasterially chanting vocal. If this were turned up really loud and you were listening solo I reckon you'd be spooked. Very strange in the Laurie Anderson 'Oh Superman' category, hit potential ... hmm probably not

Chris Cornell
Part Of Me
new single 9 March
"That chick ain't a part of me" ... Chris Cornell's new album 'Scream' is due soon and he's teamed up with Timbaland who himself had a hit with 'Scream' a different song - a hit for Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson & Nicole Scherzinger a year ago. 'Part Of Move' moves along at a steady 113bpm with a kind of slinky electro rock vibe .. possibly a very very big hit

Eugene McGuinness
Fonz
new single 23 February
Short and sweet Jack Penate stylee, Eugene McGuinness and 'Fonz' .. 163bpm's and two minutes twenty seconds. A strong single not sure it will hit though

In This Moment
Forever
new single 6 April
Paramore have big competition here. Led by Maria Brink, In This Moment are out front on the sleeve with ample-ness. 'Forever' is a storming 180bpm rocker very much of the 'Misery Business' league and with In This Moment currently tour support for Mudvayne look out for their UK Festival appearances this Summer. Hit potential

La Roux
In For The Kill
new single 16 March
"I'm going in for the kill, I'm loving you for the thrill and hoping you'll understand and don't let go of my hand .. ". For Elly La Roux with an each Thursday of February residency at Notting Hill Arts Club Yo Yo things are looking good as she'll soon to be touring support for Lily Allen. 'Kill' is an up-tempo, off-beat 147bpm electro almost grimy type of tune, the follow-up to last year's 'Quicksand' and showing steady progress

Maccabees
No Kind Words
from new album due in May
Another stand-out track heralds the return of The Maccabees. 'No Kind Words' is the first taste of their forthcoming as yet untitled new album due in May and it's somewhat somber. Kicking in with an understated 86bpm drum track, an atmospheric low key "hello" and it's sounding serious "If you've got no kind words to say, you should say nothing...." This is a real grower, an excellent return. Not sure if this will be a single but on downloads anything’s possible, hopefully top twenty with ease

Red Light Company
Arts & Crafts (Clean Version Video)
new single 2 March
And it seemed like such an innocent tune... Red Light Company are due a hit with 'Arts & Crafts'. An enchanting verse and a blitzkrieg chorus "Your testimony shakes and all you wanted breaks, you found somebody new, is it true ... ". Featuring five ladies in red and suggestively posing, the DVD clean version is as enormous as the err not so clean one, which I'd very much like to see also. Bigger

Saint Etienne
London Conversations, Best Of
new album 16 February
'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' at 102bpm and as it's composer Neil Young could scarcely have imagined twenty years prior to Saint Etienne’s 1991 treatment. Then came 'Nothing Can Stop Us Now', 'You're In A Bad Way', 'Join Our Club', 'He's On The Phone' and 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' ... Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and the divine vocals of Sarah Cracknell, a double CD packed with the pick of the Saint Etienne back catalogue, a superb collection of dance floor indie for the 90's and now

The View
Which Bitch
new album 2 February
A straight to number four on the Album Chart position bodes well for The View. 'Shock Horror' seems to have joined '5 Rebeccas' having missed the top forty singles but there must have been plenty of interested purchasers represented by a top four album. 'Which Bitch?' is another meandering collection of ideas, a bit like a blog and sometimes not joined-up thought put to music rather than a trademark sound. Kyle Falconer's vocals carry an unusual charm and warmth, however from the choice tracks 'One Off Pretender' and 'Distant Doubloon' there seems to be some theme of life and some 'political' nous although it's difficult to rationalise the lyrics. For example 'Jimmy's Crazy Conspiracy' seems to be anti-conspiratorial at the same time as recognising the possibility. I hope it's not the pressure of following up the early hit 'Same Jeans' I can hear, some tracks sound like they needed a bit of fine tuning. Anyway, a number four album can't be bad

White Lies
Farewell To The Fairground
new single 23 March
'To Lose My Life' cracked the number 32 singles chart position, a fine result for the hotly tipped White Lies debut release. Next the follow-up and get someone big credible in to re-mix it, enter Alan Moulder, he of Smashing pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine producers fame and hey presto ... 'Farewell To The Fairground' is bang-on, a chunky thundering riffed up slab of White Lies take on pop. As I've scanned the audience while I've been playing 'To Lose My Life', I can't help noticing the song left some people behind, perhaps it was the lyric not connecting in the club environment, perhaps a bit early in the songs life. I think 'Fairground' should fare better, in fact the superb production marks it out really well, and the added incentive of a remix with a cover of Kanye West's 'Love Lockdown' may take White Lies to a top twenty hit this time

White Lies

27 years ago.. un-beknown to his work mates Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton, Paul Weller was thinking of splitting the band. The Jam were in their fifth year of hit-making, punk had long since passed the mantle of cutting edge new music to hip hop. Weller's mind seemed to be more on a 60's r & b / northern soul dance floor sound he'd already revived when The Jam covered Martha Reeves 'Heatwave'. He'd known former Merton Parka Mick Talbot for some time and forming a new band The Style Council with Mick must have croseed his mind. But first more Jam business. Their swan song 'Beat Surrender' number one in December '82 preceded by arguably Weller's finest song and The Jam's biggest hit, 'Town Called Malice' which went straight to the top on 9 Feb 1982

MTV arrived in '81, The Jam 'Town' vid in '82

Top Gear Apology
Jeremy Clarkson has apologised for his insult to one-eyed Scottish people whom he offended by comparing them to Gordon Brown. Interesting to note that he
sticks by his insult to idiots, as one of whom the Prime Minister has done very well.

Great Gold Robbery
If bank robbers had made off with such a lot of dosh they'd be in jail wouldn't they? Soon after becoming Chancellor in 1997, Gordon Brown began selling Britain's gold reserves arguing gold was finished as an national investment. At Prime Ministers Questions recently, he was asked about the price of gold then and today. Perhaps not surprisingly he didn't have the information to hand. The price of gold then was $262 per ounce... the price of gold today... $911 per ounce. Mr Brown has not apologised for his insult to gold.

Sexual Equality
Thanks to Tracy Fisher for sending us this from an anonymous male friend...
He says, "I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. I have never figured out why men think with their head and women with their heart. For example, one evening last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says, 'I don't feel like it, I just want you to hold me'. I said, 'WHAT??!! What was that?!' So she says the words that every boyfriend on the planet dreads to hear... 'You're just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me to satisfy your physical needs as a man.' She responded to my puzzled look by saying, 'Can't you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in the bedroom?' Realizing that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep.
The very next day I opted to take the day off of work to spend time with her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on several different very expensive outfits. She couldn't decide which one to take, so I told her we'd just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to compliment her new clothes, so I said, 'Let's get a pair for each outfit.'
We went on to the jewelry department where she picked out a pair of diamond earrings ... she was so excited. She must have thought I was one wave short of a shipwreck. I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play tennis.
I think I threw her for a loop when I said, 'That's fine, honey.' She
was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement. Smiling with excited anticipation, she finally said, 'I think this is all dear, let's go to the cashier.'
I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, 'No honey, I don't
feel like it.'
Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled,
'WHAT?'
I then said, 'Honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You're just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman.'
And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, 'Why can't you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?'
Apparently I won't be having sex tonight either....but at least she knows I'm as smart as her."
