this week's post ...
Clinic
Tomorrow new single 24 November
Very much an aquired taste Clinic have been unfortunate bigger success has eluded them. 'Tomorrow' is another intricate 100bpm weave of sound. A seven minute remix by The DFA (not Death From Above) and the excellent 102bpm 'Hijack' accompany. Unique sound and top quality
Geo Da Silva
Do It Like A Truck new single
Greece, Spain, Turkey ... a massive European hit from the excellent Hard2Beat record label which has scored big this year with Basshunter and Platnum. It's another catchy dancefloor filling vocalized .. erm well I've heard it called a bunny hop ... Simple instructions "you sing Do It Like A Truck" the radio edit is 2'30" it's an easy 132bpm, easy for a community dancealong
John Legend
Evolver new album
I'm surprised 'green Light' spent just one week on the Top 40, perhaps at 155bpm it's just too fast for the RnB audience. However I think there's a pretty good chance it'll be re-released in the new year with a much improved result. it's all the more surprising for the praise heaped on Mr legend by his chart-topping prodigy Estelle, it seems she may have been lost to us without Legend's help. As you can tell from 'Green Light' this is an ambitious rnb album and deserves big success
Katy Perry
Hot N Cold new single 24 November
One Of The Boys album out now
Here's another superb single from 'One Of The Boys', 'Hot N Cold' is just so catchy I find the melody has hooked into Mind Control HQ here, another pounding 132bpm, No.6 and climbing, a great single from one of the stand out new acts of 2008. (Even more brilliant with 'Ur So Gay' and the quite wonderful 'Thinking Of You' waiting in the singles wings)
The Kills
Tape Song / London Hates You new single
The Kills on top form again with the 117bpm 'Tape Song' clean version and otherwise accompanied by the strange 'London Hates You' which continues 'Paris Hates You ... '. Great act, great material
La Roux
Quicksand new single 12 December
La Roux, French for the red haired one - aka 20 year old Elly Jackson. Elly, a big fan of Justice and Boyz Noize alongside Eurythmics and Depeche Mode has arrived with a 137bpm electro pounder. 'Quicksand' comes with four mixes and we like the tasty bass featured on the Chateau Marmont Remix. Nice
Ladyhawke
My Delirium new single 8 December
Ladyhawke aka Pip had a briulliant single out in the Summer called 'Paris Is Burning' and here she is with another gem from her self titled debut album.
My Delirium comes in 10 mixes, our favourites are the subtle 128bpm JBag Hot Pop Remix Edit, The Sunship Remix and new 150bpm single mix. Hitt potential
Metallica
All Nightmare Long new single 15 December
Hardcore Metallica fans should love this. Another 7 minute 50 second opus with the more subdued 100bpm intro but then a far more traditional Metallica approach with a raucous 180 then 170bpm. Fast and furious, metal excellence
Nick Harrison
One Drop new album 24 November
Nick's kinda like a Jack penate who likes old style Reggae, but paced up. Title track 'One Drop' begins with an authentic shuffling 80bpm rim shot raggae riff before powering up to 160bpm a'la as our Jack would. It's a top song as are the others featured on this sampler, the mellow 110bpm 'Plain Lazy', the 154bpm 'Honey' former single 'Oi Rude Boy' and the lush new single 'Something Special' an 144bpm hormone fuelled almost love song. Listen for his take on 'Ghost Town', 'Something Special's Nice Up' it's great - Nick's one to watch
Shortwave Set
Glitches N' Bugs new single
Well this is an interesting mini collection of soft accoustic indie edge. The 106bpm 'Glitches N' Bugs' A track leads and has an off centre appeal. Then there's the 2 minute 40 second 'Homesick' pulling in at 92bpm with a sound I can only liken to the wasp type creature featured on Doctor Who last year - it is quite a big buzzing effect and works wonderfully. Then a 100bpm accoustic take on Grace Jones 1985 disco smash 'Slave To The Rhythm' - most bizarre! Great record
Snow Patrol
A Hundred Million Suns new album
Biggest British band in America a few years back and this new album is filled with confidence gained. The great single 'Take Back This City' is followed by another superb 3 minute track 'Crack the Shutters', hopefully another smash, the album is a thoroughly well produced affair with titles like 'Please Just Take These Photos From My Hands' 'The Planets Bend Between Us' and 'Disaster Button. Great
Streets
Heaven For The Weather new single
Mikee's back, he manages to include the F word in his traditional dry delivery. Not sure whether Streets star is waning, a big hit could change the pattern of descent but I'm not sure the 144bpm 'Heaven For The Weather' is the tune to reverse his chart fortune. Mikee needs another 'Fit' and you probably know it
YoMajesty
Club Action new single
Yo Majesty is an American hip hop group consisting of rapper Shunda K and singer Jwl B, produced by U.K. based electro group HardfeelingsUK. Yo Majesty was mentioned as one of the 'Top 11 new bands of 2008' by NME magazine as well as one of the '25 Most Exciting Bands In America'. YoMajesty, great name, alternative club rap aka electro grime the 126bpm album version, the clean edit without the F word, Matt's Helpers remix and the very bassy Sunship Club Mix infact each around 126bpm. Some tight rapping from this femme duo could see some big interest and if they can keep up the pressure a breakthrough could be imminent. Good tune
