Another week of mayhem ... Metro Riots, MTV2 Gonzo & Zane Lowe on tour with The Rumblestrips ... superb!
Hey whatever's happened to Britney within hasn't affected her actual singing / recording career in an adverse way, check out her new song 'Gimme More' due in November - only 3 million myspace plays so far ... not bad for someone who's 'washed up', ask Pete Doherty.
And we were spoiled for choice .... on't Thursday morning's radio at 10.15am Red Dragon FM are playing Beautiful South's 'Rotterdam', at precisely the same time Real Radio are playing the same 1996 hit.
Pictured above Red Dragon FM's Clare Lloyd and Real Radio's Bobby McVay and pictured below at Radio One this week their former colleague Vicki Blight. Vicky is a former Red Dragon swing jock and Best Female Presenter at the Student Radio Awards in 2002 - her degree in Biochemistry and Medical Molecular Biology will come in useful should she deputise for Kelly Osbourne on Radio One's Sunday Night Surgery.
Anyways, here's the latest batch of new
Queens Of The Stone Age
Make It Wit Choo
new single 26 November
It was a toss between this and Pendulum's 'Granite' for record of the week here, QOTSA won with this slinky, chugging understated rauch .. it's great - deserves top five status! Love the artwork too!!
Pendulum
Granite
new single 26 November
The Aussies have done it again here, 'Granite' positively throbs with the trademark Pendulum Drum n Bass n Rock. Rob and Garteh seem to have carved out their own genre, sitting nicely alongside The Prodigy but somehow different and crossing over to the indie alternative crowd in a way that Drum & Bass normally does not. The word has got around and these guys are in big demand, the 174bpm 'Granite' should become Pendulum's first Top Tenner
PJ Harvey
White Chalk
new album 24 September
I really like Polly Jean's new album ... 'The Devil' is a quite simply an awesome choice for opener, mellow and disturbing and sets the scene superbly for possibly her strongest array of tunes yet. 'Dear Darkness' follows and the excellent single 'When Under Ether' truly captivating
Big Linda
I Don't Even Like You
new single 19 November & sampler
Big Linda's musicianship is superb, a quirky stoccato guitar riff on the 144bpm opener 'I Don't Even Like You' is made even stronger Rob Adler's dramatic attacking vocals. Tracks 2 and 3 are powerful and single worthy, the 82bpm 'Get It While You Can' is a chunky mid-tempo affair while '15 Seconds' is paced up at 166bpm and the finale. Not quite sure what to make of the 6 minute opus 'Windpower', it could be Big Linda's 'Wind Of Change' (Scorpions 1992 hit)
Grace
Stand Still
new single 12 November
Yeah this is a rather unusual galloping 166bpm percussive/drum arrangement which works to good effect, the lyric's pretty good too "stand still long enough the world will come to you" ... big potential
King Creosote
Home In A Sentence
new single 5 November
As The Independent put it, 'gently gorgeous' is a good way to describe King Creosote, they could sneak in to public recognition through the back door with 'Home In A Sentence' this subtle, haunting follow-up to the rather louder 'You've No Clue Do You'. I bet Jools Holland loves this, I do!
Slaves To Gravity
Meantime
new single 12 November
Slaves To Gravity demonstrate their mastery of the art of the guitar riff again here, 'Meantime' is a worthy follow-up to the UK Rock No.4 hit 'Big Red'. Their playing at the CMJ music marathon in New York this week, in a word, class.
McFly
Greatest Hits
new album 5 November
These are 'maybe's' ... it's difficult to take McFly seriously, they tend to polarize people. I can still hear the murderous treatment they gave The Beatles 'She Loves You' at Hyde Park ... that takes some doing. An ambitious idea to cover the biggest selling Beatles single and to do it so badly .. maybe it was deliberately so. Anyway it's no small achievement to have had seven No.1 singles, they hold the record for No.1 with the shortest stay on the Top 40. With just three weeks in, their last single went in at No.1, dropped to No.20 the next week and then No.40 before dissappearing. One of the most cringeworthy lyrics of recent times is included in the Ur-anus referenced 'Star Girl', but of course this album will please the faithful
