Kid Carpet
Shuffle new single 14 March 2011
Yes I've seen this young man warming a Cardiff Calling crowd in 2008... 'Shuffle is a pleasant surprise, nice choice of sound (effects & nasty guitar) and words, more a listening experience than a dance floor tune, but I'm sure there be some fine remixes on the way. Interesting, stands out from the pack so a big maybe!
Here's the pr... Kid Carpet Returns with Repo Chick
• New album “Repo Chick” out on April 18th on dan le sac’s new record label Dumb Drum
• Single “Shuffle” out March 14th with remixes by dan le sac, 1bm (aka David Thorpe of Pete & The Pirates) and Voluntary Butler Scheme
Repo Chick is the brand new album by alt-pop hero Kid Carpet, aka Bristol’s Ed Patrick. It’s his third collection of ingenious, anarchic DIY pop songs, and also forms the soundtrack to Repo Chick, a forthcoming film by American director Alex Cox and the sequel to his 80’s classic Repo Man.
“Like most opportunities that come my way, this one was very convoluted and strange,” says Carpet. “I'd never looked in the spam folder of my email account before - there was some fanmail in there from a lady in America, talking about how she and her partner were Kid Carpet fans, and that her partner made films and might like to use some of my music.“
The filmmaker in question turned out to be Alex Cox. “I remembered his voice from the Moviedrome BBC documentary series from the 80s, which he presented,” says Carpet. “So by now I was really excited. I'd love to make music for films, especially Alex Cox films. He made Sid n Nancy and Repo Man, great punk rock films. It was a lot of fun, I’d love to do more of it.”
Kid Carpet has been making his unique brand of electronic-punk-folk-shit-hop music since 2003. Bored with the seriousness and pretension of contemporary indie-pop bands, Patrick began making music with plastic toys and dodgy samples initially as a bit of a joke. But he found audiences relating to the playfulness of his energetic performances, and quickly became a festival regular and a popular tour support amongst top bands such as Arcade Fire, Art Brut, dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Badly Drawn Boy and Go! Team.
His first album, Ideas On Oh Dears, came out in 2005 and birthed the singles Your Love, Shiny Shiny New and Carrier Bag. The follow-up, Casio Royale, came out in 2008 on Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label.
Renowned DJ, musician and long-time KC fan dan le sac first saw Kid Carpet at a Sunday Best night. The two ended up touring together, and now Repo Chick will be the first release on le sac’s new label Dumb Drum. “Kid Carpet is ace simply because of his ability to write perfect pop songs but to deliver them with a level of oddness not seen outside of Monty Python,” says le sac. “The NME called him the "Fisher-Price Future of Dance" but I like to think of him as the "Tamagotchi of Pop" - keep him fed & entertained and he'll keep returning the favour.”
Repo Chick continues Kid Carpet’s inimitable zig-zagging path across the face of pop music.
Lady GaGa
Born This Way new single 11 February 2011
Well it's awesome isn't it - a gay and lesbian and bisexual and transvestite and all oddball's welcome 'Born This Way' anthem - and she's the world's number one new star and there's no sign of that changing with this powerful pop minded tome.... yes tome, this is another chapter in her scholarly output... all bets are off... an immediate Number One... and the added bonus of the possibility of Chipmunk & Brownmunk being trumped to Number Two or lower... it gets better.
Miles Kane
Come Closer new single
Perhaps not as strong or aggressive as 'Inhaler' there's still a very mod Jam 'Start' feel to this new tune and surely the tide'll turn in favour of Kane at some point soon to put him back in the Top 40 where he should be. Top track Mirrors
Into The Heart new single 14 February 2011
This is early Depeche Mode for 2011 and with The Mirrors combining with Richard X there's whiff of chart success here... maybe a la La Roux. A good catchy keyboard plinky plink and some authentic sounding new romantic vocals... Nice, hit potential
Panic! At The Disco
The Ballad Of Mona Lisa new single 21 March 2011
Another superb new record, fingers crossed this puts some rock /indie/ alternative/ emo call it what you will...but put it in the top ten! Here's the pr...
Baroque pop pioneers, Panic! At The Disco has announced the release of their hugely anticipated third album, “VICES & VIRTUES” which is set for release on 28 March through Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen. The debut single from this forthcoming album, ‘The Ballad of Mona Lisa’ will be released on 21 March and sonically harks back to the bands debut album and their very special blend of seductive, dark pop punk.
In February the band will be debuting new music from “Vices & Virtues” with two very special shows at Bowery Ballroom, NYC and Bush Hall, London on 1 February and 8 February respectively. Both shows sold out in under an hour!
The band recently shot the video for the debut single, “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” with director Shane Drake (Paramore, Fall Out Boy). Drake previously directed the group’s music videos for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” from the debut album and “Nine In The Afternoon” from “Pretty.Odd”.
Produced by Butch Walker (Weezer, Pink) and John Feldmann (The Used, Lostprophets, All Time Low) “VICES & VIRTUES” marks Panic! At The Disco’s first release in three years, as well as their debut outing as a duo comprised of singer/multi-instrumentalist Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith.
“It’s been a long time coming...but we’re really excited about the songs.” Says singer Brendon Urie
The new album follows Panic! At The Disco’s acclaimed second album, “PRETTY. ODD” which debuted at #2 in both the UK and the US upon its 2008 release. The albums remarkable popular success was matched by a wave of critical applause, with NME declaring it “a victory for artistic ambition over cynical
careerism, one of the feel-good psych-pop albums of the year.”
Released in 2005, Panic! At The Disco’s platinum-certified debut, “A FEVER YOU CAN’T SWEAT OUT” remains one of the biggest selling debuts in label history. With their visionary pop modernism and bevy of irresistible hooks, singles like the 2x-platinum smash, “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” earned the band international acclamation and a fervent fan following around the globe. What’s more, Panic! At The Disco received a number of major honors, including Grammy Award nominations and the prestigious MTV Video Music Awards “Video of the Year” prize for the imaginative companion video for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” Panic! At The Disco has also proven an unqualified sensation on the live stage, headlining an array of festivals and multi-artist tours.
The Vaccines
If You Wanna new single
I think it's still very important for acts to crack the top forty and London's Vaccines did it with their 'Sex Ex' song and this new tune powers along in a Ramones like way. 'If You Wanna' fair steams down the track and hopefully will go even higher. Very nice.
The View
Grace new single 7 March 2011
Great production and a bizarre half cocked intro grabs your attention... off course you can skip those few short seconds and cue at the guitar chord or powerpop drums.. distinctive Scot vocals soon belt out with a catchy little pop ditty and a fine trad guitar line... Hopefully top five, fingers crossed.
PR... The View have announced details of their brand new single ‘Grace.’ Set to be released on Monday 7th March, it is the first single to be released from their
eagerly anticipated third album ‘Bread And Circuses’ (the album was provisionally titled ‘The Best Lasts Forever’) and follows on from ‘Sunday’ which was made available as a free download in November via the band’s official website theviewareonfire.com. The single, produced by Youth, finds The View at their most raucous, as jagged guitars intertwine with thunderous drums and an irresistible, singalong chorus which is sure to soundtrack both indie clubs up and down the country and the UK festivals come summer. The single will come backed with an exclusive new track ‘Clowns.’
‘Bread And Circuses’ is set for release on Monday 14th March. The full tracklisting is:
Grace
Underneath The Lights
Tragic Magic
Girl
Life
Friend
Beautiful
Blondie
Sunday
Walls
Happy
The Best Lasts Forever
A 2 Bears Pagan Morning remix of ‘Friend’ was also made available on Beatport this week and has already received plays from Annie Mac on Radio 1. Wretch 32 & Example
Unorthodox new single
Wretch follows his hit 'Traktor', with this big collaboration with label-mate and Renegade-favourite Example 'Unorthodox'. The single samples Stone Roses' 'Fools Gold' (with Ian Brown giving Wretch the thumbs up!), and it is already being hammered by Radio 1 and 1Xtra's Zane, and Mistajam!
Wolf Gang
Dancing With The Devil new single 21 March 2011
Quite a quirky listen, I'm not sure the production's as sharp as it may be, not sure the echoey sound works as well as it could, the chop and change makes it a little disjointed... I like the vocals, I think with a more solid consistent backbeat the song may have worked better... and probably that's why I'm writing reviews of tunes rather than making them... Good though possibly not as strong as could be.
UK Top 40 Sun 6 Feb 11
Until today the fastest gestation period for a hit single was John Lennon's 1970 hit 'Instant Karma' written, recorded, released and in the chart within two weeks... but now fresh from Brit School and straight to Number One comes Jessie J and her second hit 'Price Tag' only played on air for the first time seven days ago and released at the same day the song has shot to Number One - unlike Lennon though it seems 'Price tag' may have been written some time back. However, the Essex lass has caused such interest she now has two tunes in the top ten, 'Do It Like A Dude' at 7 and 'Price Tag' at the top.
Another Brit School grad Adele has the UK's best-selling album for a second week while x.

Bogiez takes Barfly
Posted 2nd February 2011 - Source South Wales Echo and Bogiez.com
ONE of Cardiff’s most iconic club nights, Bogiez, has been unveiled as the new owners of the Cardiff Barfly venue.
The long-running rock and metal club is run by promoter and new Bogiez club owner Tom Martin.
He said: “There’s nowhere in Cardiff for the rock crowd, so we wanted to give people a place to go.”
The Barfly memorably staged shows by the likes of Kings Of Leon, Ash and The Killers, before shutting its doors after 10 years back in September 2010 following a takeover of Barfly’s London-based owners Mama Group by HMV.
Barfly had been suffering financially from a downturn in the number of people going to its shows and club nights.
It is now set to be given a new lease of life thanks to the capital’s much-loved rock and metal night.
“We’re going to be more of a rock club than a live music venue, but we will still have some bands on,” said Mr Martin.
“There’s a big demand for a regular rock night, especially on a Saturday.”
Mr Martin said plans were afoot to open the club by the end of February.
John Rostron, who organises the Cardiff music festival Swn, said: “There’s a big market for a rock night in Cardiff. We need this.”
The original Bogiez opened its doors at its own purpose-built club located on Penarth Road in 1982 and built up a regular and fiercely loyal following of regulars.
It hosted many famous after-show parties in the ’80s by such rock giants as Iron Maiden and Motorhead but closed in the mid- 90s. It was resurrected in 2003 as a club night at different venues across the city.

What happened @ Cardiff Barfly? Click here for our observations - economic downturn is one thing - not treating customers properly is quite another - It's fair to say 'Invisible Inaudible Disco' didn't work. Here's our week by week illumination of it's decline i.e. basically lessons in what not to do. |
