Chapel Club
All The Eastern Girls new single 11 October 2010
Yeah really liking Chapel Club... straight away they offer a different twist... they could possibly be leading some new era of Brit-pop especially now Michael Lyons is leaving the BBC.... the timing's right for them.... here's to freedom
here's the press release... (sadly, no Cardiff gig...)
'All The Eastern Girls’ creeps up all brooding and heartfelt, exploding into life under the lyrical gaze of singer Lewis Bowman. Swathes of guitar , emotive and passionate, it signals intent - the first salvo from an impressive musical armoury. Produced by Paul Epworth , the single is a taste of what’s to come early next year when Chapel Club are set to release their debut album. Released on October 11th , ‘All The Eastern Girls’ is available on limited 7” , CD and digitally through Loog Records. Clinic
I'm Aware new single 20 September 2010
Another top intro, rather more mellow than you'd perhaps expect for Clinic but hey this is still right on the edge. Clinic really have deserved far greater success and maybe this new track will prize open a bigger audience for them. Tasty.
Dinosaur Pile-Up
Mona Lisa
new single 27 September 2010
As ever great production, fuzzy guitar, strong vocals, strong idea... should pick up plenty of appropriate airplay and win new fans... good tune... 8 out of 10
Dutch Uncles
Fragrant new single 11 October 2010
Another fine off beat bass driven intro developing into quite a hooky affair with fine upfront character vocals... a Manchester band... this is well groovy, I like it.... big potential! Here's the press release Fragrant is a 3 minute slice of chrome plated futuristic pop with an explosive chorus whilst the distinctive lead vocals of Duncan Wallis paint a sinister portrait of incest… as Duncan explains, “It’s a song about a brother and sister having sex when they are young adults. The fragrance term comes apparently from the smell people give off when in close proximity to other people of the same genetics. "Prime of pride" relates to the sexual attraction through the vanity of their age, as if they cant stop doing this, they're just too damn sexy. It’s basically sex music. “The hands hands” chorus relates to support from each other in their euphoric incest whilst the verses focus in on the temptation to get down to it all." Fragrant is a big leap forward for Dutch Uncles and bodes well for their debut UK album release slated for Spring 2011. Dutch Uncles are set to support the single release with tour dates with Sky Larkin and compadres Everything Everything
Ed Drewitt
Champagne Lemonade new single 25 October 2010
Well Ed sure powers along here and this sounds like another self penned hit, his first in his own name... good song and lyric... HIT
Here's the press release.... ED DREWETT has established his own impeccable chart credentials without having even yet released his first single. The 22-year-old Essex singer-songwriter first came to our attention when his tones graced Professor Green’s #3 hit ‘I Need You Tonight’, this success was followed by him co-writing ‘All Time Low’, the #1 smash from new lad-band sensation The Wanted. Now ED DREWETT looks set to be one of this year’s biggest breaking stars with the OCTOBER 25TH release of his debut single ‘CHAMPAGNE LEMONADE’ through Virgin Records. Full of charismatic lyrical twists which emphasise his cheeky persona, ‘CHAMPAGNE LEMONADE’ is the first track to be taken from Drewett’s debut album due for release in March 2011. The musician has called upon an enviable collection of expertise for the album with producer/writer collaborators including Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen), Cutfather (Kylie Minogue, Christian Aguilera) and Fraser T. Smith (Cheryl Cole, JLS). The debut single is produced by Tim Powell, his first since leaving the Xenomania stable.
ED DREWETT will be joining Professor Green as main support on his October UK tour which culminates with a London date at Koko on October 19th.

Mr Fogg
Stung new single 23 August 2010
Mr Fogg has a catchy new tune here from his 'Moving parts' album... it's a little disjointed in paces... and we get the message 'we're gonna get stung'... not a hit but shows plenty of otential. I thought Mr Fogg would stand a chance of slipping into Owl City's new genre but it doesn't seem to have happened... I suppose as Simon Cowell says it's tougher than ever and we're saturated in new music... tough cos there's some good work gone into this album
We Are Scientists
I Don't Bite new single 11 October 2010
'Barbara' is a superb album and 'I Don't Bite' is another great single from We Are Scientists... really hope it top forties
Here's the press release... With “I Don’t Bite,” the third single from their latest album, “Barbara,” We Are Scientists combine the three time-tested necessities of a truly satisfying international radio hit: a catchy riff, a big chorus, and lyrics in English. “Do I sing along to the riff, or the vocals?” listeners will wonder to themselves. The answer, of course, is to alternate. After a summer of successful shows in the UK and abroad, including a big, badass set at “Glastonbury 2010: Sun,” We Are Scientists plan to tour for the rest of the year. Originally, they weren’t going to, but playing live has been more fun than they remembered, so now they are. “Playing Barbara to living people is so f****** awesome,” believes singer Keith Murray. “I Don’t Bite” is due for release on October 11th. The album "Barbara" is out now.
W.A.S. is Keith Murray, Chris Cain, and Andy Burrows.

Yeasayer
Madder Red new single
Mute Records hotly tipped Yeasayer have come up with an intriguing listen... the 3'40" 'Madder Red' enters with a 40 second semi falsetto vocal intro into an indie chugger, followed by the four minute album version, the seven minute Golden Filter Remix and a four minute instrumental track. Also a useful remix here, courtesy MUNK who fair pound the tune along... probably not a hit but all tracks feature great production good progress

Barfly Confirmed
Posted Thu 2nd Sep 2010 - Source - The Guardian
Confirmation has come today that Cardiff Barfly has closed for the last time. Many who don't understand the effort and costs involved in setting up a live music venue like Barfly will quickly disrespect it's virtues.
But the truth is that so many gigs are not financially viable unless the bill is built properly... hot NME bands who pull 5 people will have a dismal experience without a couple of local bands and fifty of their pals. The money making gigs and successful club nights make it possible to book the many deserving but lossmaking quality and new artist gigs.
"You gotta pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues and you know it dont come easy" noted Ringo Starr.
If your love of music is from the heart and soul, your love of music will remain... if money and power is your hearts desire best become a lawyer, banker or similar.
In 2002 Barfly was by far Cardiff's best live music venue opening every night with three bands per night yet still suffered the discrimination of losing what was a major if 'joke' Welsh Pop & Rock Award to it's main rival who put on substantially less live music that year.
Joe Public won't know that but I know that because I was there. It's an ever more common occurance in the Eastenders world that's being created around us.
If we think the recession is bad now... let's hear it for next year when the economic cuts really begin.
Blur are a Gas
Posted Thursday 2nd September 2010
It's surely Blur's biggest gig yet - a non stop revenue raiser on the British Gas switchboard - I'd love to know the size of the royalties. While you're waiting to be connected enjoy the repeated joy of the instrumental section of 'The Universal' - you could be there for hours. Any problems with British Gas? It might come in handy to talk to their head of marketing and quietly mention you can offer her/him some Blur goodies, pretend your Damon's brother/sister... you know, that kind of thing.
Beatles UK Final
Posted Wednesday 1st September 2010 - Source - The Beatles Bible
Did You Know The Beatles' final UK tour ended with two concerts at the Capitol Cinema in Cardiff. The date was 6pm Sunday 12th December 1965 and they had previously performed at the venue on 27 May 1963 and 7 November 1964. The four support acts were, in order of appearance, The Paramounts, Beryl Marsden with Steve Aldo, The Moody Blues, The Koobas and The Marionettes, and the compere was Jerry Stevens. 2,500 fans saw each concert, which lasted around 30 minutes. The Beatles performed 11 songs: I Feel Fine, She's A Woman, If I Needed Someone, Act Naturally, Nowhere Man, Baby's In Black, Help!, We Can Work It Out, Yesterday, Day Tripper and I'm Down. Between their two sets The Beatles ate sausages and mashed potato in their dressing room backstage, and watched a Western on television. During the second show a male fan appeared on stage and attempted to grab Paul McCartney and George Harrison. He was quickly bundled away by security staff and thrown out of the venue. After the concert the group piled into their black limousine to drive back to London to attend a Christmas party at the Scotch Of St James nightclub. |
